Inspection Procedure 17

CIRCUIT OPERATION
If the select switch of the shift switch assembly is set to the sport mode, battery positive voltage will be applied to the PCM (terminal number 109). If the shift switch of the shift switch assembly is set to "UP" or "DOWN" position, battery positive voltage will be applied to the PCM (terminal number 122, 110).

COMMENT
The cause is probably a malfunction of the Park/Neutral position switch circuit, shift switch assembly circuit or a defective PCM.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this cause:
- Malfunction of the Park/Neutral position switch
- Malfunction of the shift switch assembly select switch
- Malfunction of the shift switch assembly shift switch (Up)
- Malfunction of the shift switch assembly shift switch (Down)
- Damaged harness, connector
- Malfunction of the PCM

DIAGNOSIS

Required Special Tool: MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991502.

STEP 1. Is A/T Diagnostic Trouble Code Numbers "27" Or "28" Displayed?
1. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector.
2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON" position.
3. Check whether A/T diagnostic trouble code number "27" or "28" resets.
If yes, refer to Code number 27 or 28 - Park/Neutral position switch system.
If no, go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Using Scan Tool MB9911502, Check Data List.

1. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector.
2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON" position.
3. Check the following items in the data list.
a. Item 67: Select switch
b. Item 68: Shift switch (up)
c. Item 69: Shift switch (down)

4. The switches above are displayed, depending on the selector lever condition as shown in the table.
If the value above is displayed on each data list item, the malfunction can be intermittent. Refer to How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction.
If the value above is not displayed, go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check The Shift Switch Assembly.
Check the shift switch assembly, Refer to Shift Switch Assembly Continuity Check.
If the inspection results is not good, repair or replace the shift switch assembly.
If the inspection results is good, go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Check The Power Supply Circuit At The Shift Switch Assembly.

1. Disconnect harness connector C-65 and measure at the harness side.
2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON" position.
3. Selector lever position: "D" range.
4. Measure the voltage between terminal 1 and ground.
- Voltage should be battery positive voltage.

5. Measure the voltage between terminal 6 and ground.
- Voltage should be battery positive voltage.
If the measurements above do not meet the specification, repair the harness wires or the connectors between the shift switch assembly and the ignition switch.
If the measurements above meet the specification, go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check Harness Connector C-65 At Shift Switch Assembly For Damage.

If harness connector C-65 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connector C-65 is in good condition, go to Step 6.

STEP 6. Check Harness Connector C-61 <2.4L Engine> Or C-63 <3.0L Engine> At The PCM For Damage.

If harness connector C-61 <2.4L Engine> or C-63 <3.0L Engine> is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connector C-61 <2.4L Engine> or C-63 <3.0L Engine> is in god condition, go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Measure The PCM Terminal Voltage.
Measure the voltage, which is applied to terminal numbers 109, 110 and 122 of PCM connector C-61 <2.4L Engine> or C-63 <3.0L Engine> Refer to PCM Terminal Voltage Reference Chart for Transaxle Operation.
If the voltage meets the specification, replace the PCM. The immobilizer-ECU and the ignition key should be replaced together with it. Refer to Ignition Switch and Immobilizer System - Ignition Switch and Immobilizer System.
If the voltage does not meet the specification, repair the harness wires or the connectors between the PCM and the shift switch assembly.
