9: Head-Level Airbag
R50, R53 - Head-Level Airbags
Installation location
The head-level airbags are located above the doors in the area of the roof frame.
Construction
The head-level airbag extends continuously from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. Both head-level airbags have the same construction. They are fixed along the side for installation on the left and right.
Key Explanation
1 Gas generator
2 Gas lance
3 Head-level airbag before triggering
How it works
If a side impact is detected, the gas generator is ignited by the MRS control unit. The gas flows into the head-level airbag through the gas lance.
The shape and stability of the head-level airbag is maintained for several seconds after it has been triggered. The head-level airbag deflates slower than the front and side airbags. This means that the head is protected for longer.
