Fire Suppressor - With External Fire Suppressor Actuator









Removal and Installation

NOTE: This procedure details the removal of either fire suppressor.

1. WARNING: If the vehicle is equipped with a fire suppression system, disconnect the battery before anyone gets under the vehicle or near the rear axle area. You could unintentionally deploy the fire suppression system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of accidental deployment, do not use any memory saver devices when depowering the fire suppression system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Depower the fire suppression system. For additional information, refer to Fire Suppression System Depowering and Repowering Procedures.

3. Remove the rear bumper cover. For additional information, refer to Bumpers Service and Repair.

4. Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If required, remove the fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.

5. Remove the 2 brake master cylinder nuts and position the brake master cylinder aside.
- To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).

6. NOTICE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).

Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

7. NOTICE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair.

Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and disconnect the shaft.

- To install, tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

NOTE: LH is shown, RH is similar.

8. Loosen the front 2 body mount nuts.
- To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).





9. Remove the rear wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Wheels and Tires Removal and Replacement.

10. NOTICE: Do not pry in the caliper sight hole to retract the pistons, as this can damage the pistons and boots.

NOTICE: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur.

Remove the 4 brake caliper bolts, position the rear calipers aside and support the rear brake calipers using mechanic's wire.

- Support the rear brake calipers using mechanic's wire.

- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

11. Remove the rear axle. For additional information, refer to Rear Drive Axle/Differential - Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear Axle Assembly.

12. Remove the rear coil springs.

13. Remove the 2 nuts and the catalytic converter-to-muffler clamp. For additional information, refer to Exhaust System [1][2]Diagrams.
- To install, tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft).

14. NOTICE: Check the insulator for wear or damage. Install a new insulator as necessary.

Disconnect the muffler insulator.

15. Remove the tailpipe and muffler assembly.

- NOTE: Check the insulator for wear or damage. Install a new insulator as necessary.

Disconnect the tailpipe insulator.

16. Raise the vehicle on the hoist.

17. Using 2 suitable jack stands support the front of the vehicle on the number 2 cross member.

18. Using 2 suitable jack stands support the rear of the vehicle body on the pinch welds.

19. Loosen the vehicle frame.

1. Loosen the front 2 body mount bolts.
- To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).

2. Remove the remaining 14 body mount bolts and the lower insulators.
- To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).





20. Lower the rear of the frame assembly approximately 108 cm (4.25 inch

21. Disconnect the fire suppressor actuator electrical connector.

22. Release the locking clip on the fire suppressor actuator.

23. NOTICE: The coupler from the fire suppressor actuator to the fire suppressor is a quarter turn bayonet coupler

NOTICE: The bayonet coupler should turn using hand pressure, if required the coupler can be turned using a suitable tool.

Disconnect the fire suppressor actuator coupler.

24. Using a suitable rubber stopper or a fire suppressor shipping plug , seal the opening in the fire suppressor.

25. NOTICE: Secure the fire suppressor to the transmission jack with a suitable strap.

Support the fire suppressor with a suitable transmission jack.

26. Remove and discard the 4 fire suppressor bolts.
- To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

27. Remove and discard the 2 fire suppressor retainer nuts.
- To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

28. Remove and discard the fire suppressor retainer.
- Push the tabs to release the retainer from the No. 4 crossmember.

29. Remove the fire suppressor.

30. Remove and discard the two No. 4 crossmember J-nuts.

31. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
