Steering Gear: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the steering column shaft to flexible coupling clamp plate bolt.
^ Rotate the clamp plate to disengage.
3. Lower the sub-frame to gain access to the steering gear tubes.
4. Disconnect the high-pressure tube support bracket.
5. Disconnect the low-pressure tube support bracket.
6. Detach the steering gear unions.
1 Disconnect the high-pressure pipe union and drain the fluid into a suitable container.
2 Disconnect the return pipe union.
CAUTION: Whenever the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear value body ports must be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.
7. Remove the sub-frame. Cross-Member
8. Remove the flexible coupling.
9. Disconnect the steering gear.
10. Remove the steering gear.
CAUTION: Make sure that the pressure check valve does not fall out of the valve body pressure port when the steering gear is being removed.
INSTALLATION
Steering Gear Mounting:
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
WARNING: Use a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow these instructions will result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Before lowering the vehicle ensure that the steering is in the straight ahead position.
NOTE:
^ If a new steering gear assembly is being installed the unions that are supplied fitted to the pump should be removed and saved for future use.
^ Install a new union O-ring onto the unions using Teflon Seal Replacer Set.
^ Bleed the power steering system.
