C1898: VAPS Circuit Open

C1898-1 Test For VAPS Open Circuit
- Turn off engine.
- Disconnect GEM connector C223.
- Measure resistance between C223-1, Circuit 153 (P/Y) and C223-3, Circuit 86 (GY/O).
Is resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
TURN engine OFF.
Go to C1898-4
No
Go to C1898-2

C1898-2 Check Continuity On Circuit 153 (P/Y)
- Disconnect variable assist power steering actuator.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between C223-1, Circuit 153 (P/Y) and actuator connector Circuit 153 (P/Y).
Is resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to C1898-3
No
SERVICE Circuit 153 (P/Y) for open circuit.

C1898-3 Check Continuity On Circuit 86 (GY/O)
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between C223-2, Circuit 86 (GY/O) and variable assist power steering actuator connector Circuit 86 (GY/O).
Is resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
REPLACE variable assist power steering actuator.
No
SERVICE Circuit 86 (GY/O) for open circuit.

C1898-4 Wiggle Test
- Reconnect GEM connector C223.
- Reconnect the variable assist power steering actuator connector.
- Access GEM wiggle test. Follow directions displayed on NGS.
- Tap actuators, connectors and flex harness from variable assist power steering actuator and GEM.
Is C1898 or C1899 retrieved during wiggle test?
Yes
SERVICE component being wiggled when DTC was retrieved.
RESTORE vehicle.
REPEAT self-test.
No
REPLACE GEM. Service and Repair
