A15 Actuator (Electrical) Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect VAPS harness connector.
- Connect DVOM to Pin 9, Circuit 155 (GY/R) and Pin 1, Circuit 156 (GY/O).
- Measure resistance.
- Resistance should be between 43 and 70 Ohms.
- Connect DVOM to Pin 12, Circuit 153 (P/Y) and Pin 11, Circuit 154 (P/LG).
- Measure resistance.
- Resistance should be between 43 and 70 Ohms.
Is resistance between 43 and 70 Ohms?
Yes
Go to A16.
No
Go to A19. A19 - A21
A16 Harness Voltage At Actuator Connector
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Verify that VAPS connector is connected to power steering variable assist control.
- Disconnect actuator connector from VAPS harness connector.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- Wait five seconds.
- Measure DC voltage between Circuit 155 (GY/R) and ground.
- Then measure voltage between Circuit 156 (GY/O) and ground.
- One of these two circuits should be greater than 10 volts and the other less than 2 volts.
- Repeat the two steps above for Circuit 153 (P/Y) and 154 (P/LG).
Do voltage readings check OK?
Yes
Go to A17.
No
REPLACE VAPS module. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11
A17 Actuator (Mechanical) Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Remove actuator. Service and Repair
- Reconnect actuator connector to VAPS harness connector.
- Attach DVOM as shown to data link connector (near power brake booster). Use the Engine Views to help locate the connector Component Locations
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- The power steering variable assist control will go through a diagnostic check, consisting initially of the 90 second efforts change sequence.
- If the actuator is mechanically operable, the actuator valve will move between its two limits of travel (approximately 3 mm (1/8 inch)). This movement can be detected by watching the valve spring expand and relax between the travel limits.
Does spring move?
Yes
REPLACE power steering short rack assembly. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11
No
Go to A18.
A18 Check Actuator Resistance
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect actuator connector from harness connector.
- Connect DVOM to Circuits 155 (GY/R) and 156 (GY/O).
- Measure resistance.
Resistance should be between 43 and 70 Ohms.
- Connect DVOM to Circuits 153 (P/Y) and 154 (P/LG) on actuator.
- Measure resistance.
Resistance should be between 43 and 70 Ohms.
Is resistance between 43 and 70 ohms?
Yes
Go to A20. A19 - A21
No
Go to A19.
