Valve: Service and Repair
Remove/Install Valves
Shown On Engine 111:
Remove/Install
1 Remove cylinder head (87)
2 Remove camshafts
3 Place cylinder head (87) onto assembly board (24)
NOTE: Place correct side of insert (25) into assembly board (24) with the direction of travel arrow (26) facing forward. Attach cylinder head (87) to assembly board (24) with a cylinder head bolt (23) at the front and rear, with front of cylinder head pointing toward direction of travel arrow (26).
4 Bolt on support bridge (2) with slide (7)
NOTE: Screw support bridge (2) onto camshaft bearings 1+5 and 6+10, for this step use collar bolts for camshaft bearing caps.
5.1 Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (3) (bucket tappets)
- Engine 111
5.2 Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements
- Engine 271
6 Attach lever compression tool (9) with thrust piece (5) into collapsible section (7) and align.
- Position thrust piece (5) vertically at valve spring retainer (15) and align parallel to slide (7).
- Fix thrust piece (5) in place with screw (8) to prevent it turning.
7 Remove upper valve spring plate (15) and valve spring (17)
NOTE: Press together valve spring (17)
- Take out split valve spring retainer locks (14) with tweezers (6).
NOTE: The valve springs of the inlet valves and exhaust valves are identical.
8 Replace valve stem seals
9 Remove lower valve spring plate (20)
Testing
10 Inspect top and bottom valve spring retainers (15 and 20)
- Check valve spring retainers for signs of scoring replace if necessary.
DANGER:
- Risk of explosion and poisoning. The melting down or improper handling of sodium-filled valves may result in explosion or poisoning. Risk of injury. Skin contact with sodium may result in heat or chemical burns.
- Do not open sodium-filled valves. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses when handling damaged valves.
11 Unbolt cylinder head (87) from assembly board (24), remove valves
NOTE: Inspect surface of valve stems for roughness and formation of burrs (visual inspection or check with nail).
- Replace valves with rough stem surface or burrs.
12 Install in the reverse order.
