Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch
LOCATION
- The torque converter lock-up is integrated in the torque converter.
TASK
- The power losses of the torque converter are minimized by reducing converter slip and consequently the engine speed is reduced.
- The torque converter lock-up clutch is engaged in 5th, 4th and 3rd gear depending on engine speed and load.
DESIGN
- The outer multiple-disc carrier (16a) is connected to the input rotor (P) via the cover shell (17). The inner multiple-disc carrier (16b) is connected to the output rotor (T).
FUNCTION
- On actuation triggered by the transmission control module (N15/3), oil pressure controlled by the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid valve (Y3/6y6) is led through the input shaft (1) to the pressure chamber behind the piston (16d). This compresses the multiple-disc pack (16c) and therefore makes possible direct torque transmission between the input rotor (P) and output rotor (T).
