Steering Column Shaft - Intermediate









Removal and Installation

NOTICE: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Jacking and Lifting Service and Repair.

2. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).

Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.





3. Remove the steering column opening trim panel. For additional information, refer to the Instrument Panel - Exploded View in Instrument Panel and Console Instrument Panel - Exploded View.

4. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

5. Remove the 3 steering column shaft boot nuts.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

6. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
- To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

7. Remove the steering column shaft.

8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If installing a new steering column shaft, transfer parts as needed.
- Remove the constant tension clamp and the steering column shaft boot.
