PROPELLER SHAFT: REAR PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY: REMOVAL
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR CENTER BRACE
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and floor center brace.
2. DISCONNECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Sensor 2)
(a) Disconnect the sensor Removal.
3. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY Removal
4. REMOVE CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY Removal
5. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.
6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and insulator.
7. REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Using SST, loosen the adjusting nut until it can be turned by hand.
SST: 09922-10010
HINT: Use 2 of the same type of SST.
(b) Place matchmarks on the transmission companion flange, flexible coupling and intermediate shaft.
(c) Remove the 3 nuts, 3 washers and 3 bolts from the transmission side.
NOTE:
The propeller shaft should not be disconnected from the flexible coupling.
(d) Place matchmarks on the differential companion flange, flexible coupling and propeller shaft.
(e) Remove the 3 nuts, 3 washers and 3 bolts from the differential side.
NOTE:
The propeller shaft should not be disconnected from the flexible coupling.
(f) Remove the 2 center support bearing set bolts and adjusting washers.
NOTE:
When removing the set bolts, support the center support bearing by hand so that the transmission and intermediate shaft, and propeller shaft and differential remain in a straight line.
Maximum joint angle:
5°
HINT: Some vehicles are not equipped with an adjusting washer.
(g) Push the propeller shaft straight forward to compress the propeller shaft and pull out the propeller shaft from the centering pin of the differential.
NOTE:
Press the propeller shaft straight ahead to keep the transmission and intermediate shaft aligned straight.
(h) Pull the propeller shaft outward toward the vehicle's rear.
NOTE:
The intermediate shaft and propeller shaft should not be disconnected.
HINT: If the flexible coupling cannot be easily disconnected by hand, insert a screwdriver into the bolt hole of the flexible coupling as shown in the illustration. Then pry the coupling out.
NOTE:
Do not bring the screwdriver blade in direct contact with the flexible coupling's rubber portion.
8. INSPECT FLEXIBLE COUPLING
(a) Check that the front and rear flexible couplings are not cracked or damaged.
If the flexible coupling is damaged, replace the propeller shaft assembly.
(b) Inspect the flexible coupling centering bush.
(1) Check for damage to the bush.
If the bush is damaged, replace the propeller shaft assembly.
