Drive Belt: Testing and Inspection
3UZ-FE ENGINE MECHANICAL: DRIVE BELT: INSPECTION
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
HINT: Use of the automatic tensioner has made tension and flexibility measurements unnecessary.
(a) Check that the indicator mark on the automatic tensioner is within the A range shown in the illustration.
HINT: When the mark is in the range B, replace the belt with a new one.
(b) Check the belt for wear, cracks or other signs of damage.
If any of the following defects is found, replace the fan and generator V belt.
- The belt is cracked.
- The belt is worn out to the extent that the cords are exposed.
- The belt has chunks missing from the ribs.
(c) Check that the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves.
HINT: Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the groove on the bottom to the pulley. If it has slipped out, replace the fan and generator V belt. Install a new fan and generator V belt correctly.
2. INSPECT V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
(a) Idle the engine and then stop the engine. Check that the drive belt is between the edges of the idler pulley.
(b) Remove the drive belt from the tensioner pulley.
(c) Turn the pulley, and check that the tensioner bearing moves smoothly and quietly.
If necessary, replace the tensioner.
(d) Install the drive belt.
