DESCRIPTION
The VVT sensor system consists of a timing rotor (installed on each camshaft) and Magnetic Resistance Element (MRE) type VVT sensor. The timing rotor (camshaft) has 3 protrusions. When it rotates, the magnetic vector (direction of magnetic field) applied to the VVT sensor's MRE varies, which causes its resistance to vary. This varying resistance is converted to voltage, and then modified into a rectangular waveform with Hi (approximately 4 V) and Lo (approximately 1 V) outputs. As a result, the actual camshaft's position is detected and the position is output to the ECM.
- Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope
HINT:
- The correct waveform is as shown.
- VV1+ and VV2+ stand for the VVT sensor (for intake side) signal, and NE+ stands for the CKP sensor signal.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
If no signal is transmitted by the VVT sensor despite the camshaft revolving, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
When the sensor output voltage remains less than 0.3 V, or more than 4.7 V for more than 5 seconds, the ECM sets a DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT: Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK ECM TERMINAL VOLTAGE
(a) Inspect the ECM using an oscilloscope.
(1) While the engine is idling, check the waveform between the terminals of the ECM connector.
Standard voltage:
OK -- REPLACE ECM
NG -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE (SENSOR POWER SOURCE)
(a) Disconnect the E31 or E39 VVT sensor for intake side connector.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard voltage:
NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE - ECM)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the E31 or E39 VVT sensor for intake side connector.
(b) Disconnect the E2 or E4 ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE)
(a) Check the VVT sensor installation.
OK:
Sensor is installed correctly.
NG -- TIGHTEN SENSOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. CHECK INTAKE CAMSHAFT
(a) Check the teeth of the signal plate.
OK:
Signal plate teeth do not have any cracks or deformation.
NG -- REPLACE INTAKE CAMSHAFT
OK -- Continue to next step.
6. REPLACE VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE
(a) Replace the VVT sensor for intake side Removal.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0340, P0342, P0343, P0345, P0347 AND/OR P0348)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(c) Turn the Techstream ON.
(d) Clear DTCs DTC Check / Clear.
(e) Start the engine.
(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
(g) Read DTCs.
Result:
HINT: If the engine does not start, replace the ECM.
B -- REPLACE ECM
A -- END
8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR FOR INTAKE SIDE - ECM)
