Battery: Testing and Inspection

Inspection

Electrolyte Level
1. Check whether or not the electrolyte level lies between the UPPER LEVEL and the LOWER LEVEL lines.
2. If low, add distilled water to the "UPPER LEVEL". Do not overfill.

Specify Gravity of Electrolyte
1. Measure the specific gravity with a hydrometer.
Specific Gravity: 1.27-1.29 (at 68°F [20°C])

NOTICE
If the battery charge indicator is not blue when the specific gravity is normal, the indicator could be defective.

Battery discharge test

Terminal and cable
1. Check that battery terminal connections are tight to ensure good electrical connections
2. Check for corroded or frayed battery cables.
3. Check the rubber protector on the positive terminal for proper coverage.
4. Clean the terminals, if necessary, and coat them with grease.

Recharging

Slow charging
1. It is not necessary to remove the vent caps to perform a 510W charge.

Quick charging
1. Remove the battery from the vehicle and remove the vent caps to perform a quick charge.

WARNING
- Before performing maintenance or recharging the battery, turn oft all accessories and stop the engine.
- The negative cable must be removed first and installed last.
- Set the battery in water when quick charging to prevent overheating the battery.

Generator

Removal/Installation

CAUTION
- Reversing the battery connections will damage the rectifier.
- The use of high-voltage testers (such as a megger) will damage the rectifier.
- Remember that battery voltage is always applied to the generator B terminal.
- Do not ground the L terminal while the engine is running.
- Do not start the engine while the connector is disconnected from the L and S terminals.

1. Remove in the order shown in the figure.
2. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary. (Replace generator as one unit; do not disassemble.)
3. Install in the reverse order of removal.
