Test Drive
NOTE: Do not attempt to "drive" the vehicle by placing it on a lift. This can produce incorrect diagnostic trouble codes.DRIVE TESTS
These tests are appropriate when additional information is needed beyond what was given by the driver. These tests may also be used to check the results of having corrected one or more problems during the course of performing component tests. They should also be used as a final drive test before returning the vehicle to regular service.
Low-Speed ABS Stop
1. Drive the vehicle at about 10 mph and apply brakes with enough force to cause the wheels to lock up. If conditions make detection of wheel lock-up difficult, have an assistant watch the wheels from outside of the vehicle.
2. Note if any of the wheels lock-up. If they do not, proceed to Low-Speed Non-ABS Stop. Also, note if the ABS warning light illuminates, and if any other symptoms occur during the braking. In particular, notice if the rate of slowing is poor, if the vehicle pulls to the side, or if the brake pedal feels hard (non-responsive) or soft (leaking).
Low Speed Non-ABS Stop
1. Drive the vehicle at about 20 mph and apply the brakes with only enough force to cause a normal, non-emergency stop.
2. Note if the ABS has been activated by the sound of the pump motor running and/or by pulsations in the brake pedal. Also, note if the warning ABS warning light illuminates, or if any of the symptoms described above occur.
