Front Vision Camera System Malfunction

Front Vision Camera System Malfunction

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions) provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The frontview camera image display module receives a 12-volt signal from the body control module (BCM) indicating that the vehicle is in reverse gear. When this signal is detected the frontview camera image display module will provide a regulated 6-volt power source to the frontview camera. The inside rear view mirror (ISRVM) receives a 12-volt signal from the BCM indicating that the vehicle is in reverse gear. The front vision display will then be deployed from the ISRVM. The ISRVM receives video information directly from the frontview camera image display module providing a view to the front of the vehicle. If a problem exists with the front vision display not deploying or if a proper video signal is not detected, the front vision ON/OFF indicator located on the ISRVM will flash.

Diagnostic Aids

A poor video image can be caused by ice, snow, and mud buildup on the lens of the frontview camera. Also, extreme lighting conditions can affect performance, such as operating in the dark or with bright sunlight shining on the camera. Extreme high or low temperatures can also affect the image quality.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Inspect the frontview camera for any debris on the lens or a damaged bezel or bezel seal.

Clean any debris from the lens. If the lens, bezel, or bezel seal are damaged, replace as necessary.

2. Engine running, frontview camera switch is OFF, verify that the LCD is not deployed from the ISRVM.

If the LCD is deployed and an image is present, refer to Front Vision System Always On

If the LCD is deployed but there is no image, refer to LCD Always Deployed.

3. Engine running, frontview camera switch is ON, verify that the LCD is deployed and an image is present on the display.

If the LCD is deployed but there is no image present, refer to Front Vision System Does Not Display

If the LCD will not deploy, refer to LCD Will Not Deploy.

Circuit/System Testing

Front Vision System Always On
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the frontview camera switch.
2. Engine running, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the frontview camera switch control circuit terminal B and ground

If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.

3. If all circuits test normal, replace the frontview camera switch.

LCD Always Deployed
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the ISRVM.
2. Engine running, frontview camera switch OFF, verify a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 9 and ground.

If the test lamp does illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.

3. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the ISRVM.

Front Vision System Does Not Display
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the frontview camera.
2. Test for less than 10.0 ohm between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

3. Engine running, frontview camera switch ON, test for 5.8-6.2 volts between the 6-volt reference circuit terminal A and ground.

If less than the specified range, test the reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

If greater than the specified range, test the reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

4. Ignition OFF, test for greater than 1.0 ohm between the camera video signal circuit terminal C and ground.

If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

5. Engine running, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the camera video signal circuit terminal C and ground.

If the test lamp illuminates, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the frontview camera image display module.
7. Test for less than 3.0 ohms between the signal circuit terminal C at the frontview camera harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 9 at the frontview camera image display module harness connector.

If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

8. Engine running, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

9. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 2 and the ground circuit terminal 3.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

10. Frontview camera switch ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the frontview camera switch.

11. Ignition OFF, test for greater than 1.0 ohm between the camera video signal circuit listed below and ground.

* Signal circuit terminal 11
* Signal circuit terminal 12

If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the inside rearview mirror.

12. Engine running, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the camera video signal circuit listed below and ground.

* Signal circuit terminal 11
* Signal circuit terminal 12

If the test lamp illuminates, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the inside rearview mirror.

13. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inside rearview mirror.
14. Test for less than 1.0 ohm between the signal circuit terminal 11 at the frontview camera image display module harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 2 at the inside rearview mirror harness connector.

If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

15. Test for less than 1.0 ohm between the signal circuit terminal 12 at the frontview camera image display module harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 1 at the inside rearview mirror harness connector.

If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

16. If all circuits test normal, replace the frontview camera image display module.

LCD Will Not Deploy
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inside rearview mirror.
