Headliner Removal/Installation

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, 2-door SRS Component Location Index (2-Door), 4-door SRS Component Location Index (2-Door) and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to bend or scratch the headliner.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.
1. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure, then wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
2. Remove these items:
- 2-door:
- A-pillar trims, both sides
- Ceiling light Service and Repair
- Quarter pillar trims, both sides
- Grab handles, two places Service and Repair
- 4-door:
- A-pillar trims, both sides
- Ceiling light Service and Repair
- B-pillar upper/lower trims, both sides
- C-pillar trims, both sides
- Grab handles, four places Service and Repair
3. Release the tabs (A) of the sunvisor cap (B) from the bracket (C) with the appropriate trim tool.
4. Remove the sunvisor cap (A) from the bracket (B).
5. From both sides, remove the sunvisor (A).
1. Release the sunvisor from the holder (B).
2. Remove the TORX screws with a TORX T25 bit.
6. Push the hook (A) with a flat-tip screwdriver, and turn the holder (B) 90 °, then pull it out.
7. Remove the front individual map light assembly (A).
1. Remove the lenses (B).
2. Remove the bolts.
3. If equipped, release the four tabs (C), then pull out the moonroof switch (D) or the navigation microphone.
4. Disconnect the front individual map light connector (E). If equipped, disconnect the moonroof switch connector (F) or the navigation microphone connector (G).
8. Driver's side without moonroof: Detach the harness clips (A) from the A-pillar (B).

9. For some models: Remove the driver's dashboard undercover Driver's Dashboard Undercover Removal/Installation.
10. From under the driver's dash, disconnect the roof wire harness connector (A), and detach the harness clip (B).
11. Remove the center console Center Console Removal/Installation.
12. Slide the front seat all the way back, and recline the seat-back fully.
13. 4-door: Remove the bolts securing the parking brake base frame (A), and lay it down as needed.
14. With the help of an assistant, lower the headliner (A).
1. Remove the front door opening seals (B) and the rear door opening seals (C) from each roof area.
2. 2-door: Detach the clips (D).
3. Detach the rear clips (E) by pulling down the rear area of the headliner.
4. With moonroof: Release the Velcro fasteners (F) by pulling down the headliner at the moonroof opening.
5. With moonroof: Release the hooks (G) of the moonroof by moving the headliner rearward.
15. Lower the front of the headliner below the steering wheel. Rotate the headliner, and pull out it with the roof wire harness (I) through the passenger's front door.
NOTE: Do not bend the headliner. Bending the headliner will crease and damage it.
16. Without moonroof: If necessary, remove the cushion tape (A, B) fastening the roof wire harness (C) to the headliner (D), then remove the harness from the headliner.

17. If necessary, remove the side curtain airbag mounting bolt (A) and the grab handle bracket mounting bolts (B), then remove the grab handle bracket (C) by releasing the hooks (D).

18. Install the headliner in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the headliner and the designated trim pieces, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the headliner and all removed trim. Replace any pieces with the following damage:
- Any creases or tears in the headliner (A)
- Any cracks or breakage in the grab handle (B)
- Any damage around the grab handle holes (C) or the sunvisor holes (D) in the headliner
- Any cracks in the sunvisor stay base (E)
- Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor stay shaft (F)
- Any cracks in the sunvisor base (G)
- Any cracks or breakage in the vanity mirror base (H)
- Any Velcro fasteners (I) or the clip bases (J) which have come off the headliner
- When installing the grab handle, push on the handle against the bracket (K) until the clips (L) snap into place securely.
- If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Replace the removed cushion tapes with new pieces.
- Make sure the each connector is plugged in properly.
- Check that both sides of the headliner are securely attached to the body.
- Make sure the headliner overlaps the trim pieces correctly.
- Be careful not to crease or damage the headliner when reinstalling it through the front passenger's door opening. Also be careful not to scratch the body.
- Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure Procedures.
- Check for any DTCs that may have been set during repairs, and clear them.
