Symptom Troubleshooting: No sound is heard from the speaker(s) (display is normal)
No sound is heard from the speaker(s) (display is normal) (with navigation)
NOTE:
- Check the vehicle battery condition first. Testing and Inspection
- Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.
- Set the fader and balance positions to the center.
- Before performing symptom troubleshooting, do the Audio unit power switch will not turn on troubleshooting. Audio Unit Power Switch Will Not Turn On (No Information Display and No Sound) (With Navigation)
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Check for sound in each mode (AM, FM, XM, and CD).
Is the sound OK in each mode?
YES - Intermittent failure. The system is OK at this time. Check for loose connections at the audio-navigation unit and speaker(s).
NO - Go to step 3.
3. Check that the volume button is not set to the min level.
Is it at the MIN level?
YES - Raise the volume level, and recheck the function.
NO - Go to step 4.
4. On the steering wheel, check the navigation talk command.
Is the navigation talk command function set?
YES - Cancel the navigation talk command by pressing the navigation BACK button, then recheck the function.
NO - Go to step 5.
5. Check to see if there is a specific speaker that has no sound.
Do any or all of the speakers fail to sound?
YES - Go to step 6.
NO - Speakers all work, but sound quality is poor in step 1.
- If sound is poor only with XM radio or the XM radio does not function, go to Poor or no sound with XM radio. Poor Or No Sound With XM Radio (Navigation Unit Does Display XM Channels) (With Navigation)
- If the sound is poor only with AM or FM, go to Poor AM or FM radio reception or interference. Symptom Troubleshooting
- If the sound is poor only with disc.
- Try several known-good disc in the audio-navigation unit.
- If the sound quality is normal, the original disc is faulty.
- If the sound quality is still poor, replace the audio-navigation unit. Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
- If the sound is poor in all modes, go to Sound Quality Diagnosis. Sound Quality Diagnosis - Left/Right Channel ID
6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
7. Check the speaker(s) with no sound for any damage.
Is there any damage?
YES - Substitute the speaker Speaker Test/Replacement and recheck.
NO - Go to step 8.
8. Remove the speaker(s) with no sound, Speaker Test/Replacement and disconnect its connector.
9. Check the speaker 2P connector for a loose or poor connection.
Reconnect the speaker 2P connector, and recheck the symptom; does it still fail?
YES - Go to step 10.
NO - Operation is normal.
10. Test the speaker(s). Speaker Test/Replacement
Is the speaker(s) OK?
YES -
- With premium audio system: Go to step 19.
- Without premium audio system: Go to step 11.
NO - Replace the speaker(s). Speaker Test/Replacement
11. Reconnect the speaker connector(s).
12. Remove the audio-navigation unit. Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) Disconnect audio-navigation unit connector A (24P).
NOTE:
- Eject all the CDs before removing the audio-navigation unit to prevent damaging the CD player's load mechanism.
- Remove the PC card before removing the audio-navigation unit.
13. Check for continuity between body ground and audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair a short to body ground in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the speaker.
NO - Go to step 14.
14. Disconnect tweeter 2P connectors.
15. Measure the resistance between each pair of speaker terminals at audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) according to the table.
Is the resistance OK?
YES - Go to step 16.
NO - Repair an open or a short in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the speaker.
16. Disconnect the driver's door speaker 2P connector and the front passenger's door speaker 2P connector.
17. Connect audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) terminals with jumper wires as shown.
18. Check for continuity between the tweeter 2P connector according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Replace the audio-navigation unit. Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)
NO - Repair an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the tweeter.
19. Reconnect the speaker connector(s).
20. Disconnect stereo amplifier connector A (20P).
21. Check for continuity between body ground and the stereo amplifier connector A (20P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the stereo amplifier and the speaker(s).
NO - Go to step 22.
22. Measure the resistance between each pair of speaker terminals at stereo amplifier connector A (20P) according to the table.
Is there resistance OK?
YES -
- 2-door: Go to step 23.
- 4-door: Go to step 27.
NO - Repair an open or a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the speaker.
23. Disconnect stereo amplifier connector B (14P).
24. Disconnect audio-navigation unit connector A (24P).
25. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) and body ground according to the table. Then check for continuity between the same terminals listed in the table and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) terminal No. 2 (the harness shield).
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 26.
26. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 37.
NO - There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.
27. Disconnect stereo amplifier connector B (14P).
28. Disconnect audio-navigation unit connector A (24P).
29. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) and body ground according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 30.
30. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 31.
NO - There is an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.
31. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) and body ground according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 32.
32. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 33.
NO - There is an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.
33. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) and body ground according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 34.
34. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 35.
NO - There is an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.
35. Check for continuity between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) and body ground according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short in the wire between the stereo amplifier and the audio-navigation unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 36.
36. Check for continuity between audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) and stereo amplifier connector B (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 37.
NO - There is an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.
37. Reconnect stereo amplifier connectors A (20P) and B (14P).
38. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 10 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 39.
NO - Repair an open in the wire between the No. 17 (15 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box and stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 10.
39. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
40. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 9 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 41.
NO - Repair an open in the wire between the stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 9 and audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) terminal No. 17.
41. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector B (14P) terminal No. 7 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 42.
NO - Repair an open in the wire between the stereo amplifier connector B (14P) terminal No. 7 and audio-navigation unit connector A (24P) terminal No. 17.
42. Measure the voltage between stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 20 and body ground.
Is there less than 0.2 V?
YES - Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit, Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original audio-navigation unit. If the symptom is still present, substitute a known-good stereo amplifier, Service and Repair and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original stereo amplifier.
NO - Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between stereo amplifier connector A (20P) terminal No. 20 and body ground; 2-door (G505), 4-door (G601).
