Pinpoint Test AO: The Parking Brake Warning Chime Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) uses vehicle speed data sent from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus and the parking brake switch status sent from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) to determine when to turn on the parking brake warning chime.
The SJB (Smart Junction Box) monitors and uses the ignition ON position, the parking brake on status, and vehicle speed that is greater than 4.8 km/h (3 mph). The parking brake warning chime stops sounding and resets if the parking brake is released, the ignition is not in the ON position, if the vehicle speed is below 4.8 km/h (3 mph), or after 90 seconds from the time the chime is activated.
NOTE: Make sure that the brake warning chime operation is verified with the vehicle moving at least 4.8 km/h (3 mph) with the parking brake slightly applied (just enough to turn the brake warning indicator on).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Brake warning indication concern
- Speedometer concern
- SJB (Smart Junction Box)
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST AO : THE PARKING BRAKE WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE
AO1 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- On vehicles without Intelligent Access (IA), insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder.
- On vehicles equipped with IA (Intelligent Access), place the ignition in the ACC mode.
- Open the LH front door and observe the key-in-ignition warning chime operation.
Does the key-in-ignition warning chime operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AO2.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
AO2 CHECK THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Apply and release the parking brake.
Does the brake warning indicator turn on when applied and turn off when released?
Yes
GO to AO3.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test K (never on) or GO to Pinpoint Test L (always on). Pinpoint Test K: The Brake Warning Indicator is Never On Pinpoint Test L: The Brake Warning Indicator is Always On
AO3 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Drive the vehicle and verify that the speedometer is operating correctly.
Does the speedometer operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AO4.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Speedometer Is Inoperative
AO4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the SJB (Smart Junction Box) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.
No
INSTALL a new SJB (Smart Junction Box). TEST the system for normal operation.
