Pinpoint Test AC: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the transaxle status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system or in the transaxle, the PCM provides the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on. When a AWD (All-Wheel Drive) fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on.

If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transaxle status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on.

If the AWD (All-Wheel Drive) status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0102:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100:00 is set in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system concern

- AWD (All-Wheel Drive) concern

- Transaxle concern

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AC : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

AC1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION

- Close all doors, hood and luggage compartment lid.

- Ignition ON.

- Open the driver door while monitoring the door ajar message center warning indicator.

Does the driver door ajar message center warning indicator turn off with the driver door closed and turn on with the driver door open?

Yes
GO to AC2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Test AF: The Message Center Is Not Operating Correctly

AC2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AR. Pinpoint Test AR: DTC U0100:00

For DTC U0102:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AS. Pinpoint Test AS: DTC U0102:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
GO to AC3.

AC3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
DIAGNOSE all 4X4 control module DTCs first. REFER to Transfer Case.
