Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0164:87

Normal Operation

- DTC U0164:87 (Lost Communication With HVAC Control Module: Missing Message)- sets in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) if data messages received from the HVAC module over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) are missing for more than 5 seconds. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to Information Bus.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- HVAC module

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AW : DTC U0164:87

AW1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN

- Ignition ON.

- Verify that there is an observable symptom present.

Is an observable symptom present?

Yes
GO to AW2.

No
The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.

AW2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.

- Carry out the network test.

Does the HVAC module pass the network test?

Yes
GO to AW3.

No
REFER to Information Bus.

AW3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) AND HVAC MODULE SELF-TESTS

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) and HVAC module self-tests.

Is DTC U3003:16 or DTC U3003:17 recorded?

Yes
For the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) , GO to Pinpoint Test AY (U3003:16) Pinpoint Test AY: DTC U3003:16 or GO to Pinpoint Test AZ (U3003:17) Pinpoint Test AZ: DTC U3003:17.

For the HVAC module, REFER to Heating and Air Conditioning.

No
GO to AW4.

AW4 RECHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs

NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or PMI (Programmable Module Installation) may not have been carried out.

- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Is DTC U0164:87 still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new HVAC module. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

If DTC U0164:87 is still present, INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
