Pinpoint Tests
Diagnostic Routine A
Diagnostic Overview
The Grille Shutter Is Inoperative Or Does Not Operate Correctly
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 33 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
REFER to Grille Shutter .
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
- Verify BJB (Battery Junction Box) fuse 35 (5A) is OK.
- Inspect the grille opening for any obstructions that can prohibit operation of the grille shutter.
Pinpoint Test
1. CHECK FOR PCM (Powertrain Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
1. Ignition ON.
2. Using a scan tool, clear the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
3. Using a scan tool, perform PCM (Powertrain Control Module) self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U012D present?
2. CHECK THE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: Grille Shutter Actuator.
3. Ignition ON.
4. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
3. CHECK THE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
4. CHECK THE LIN (Local Interconnect Network) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
1. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175E.
2. Measure:
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
5. VERIFY THE GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILL SHUTTER A POSITION - COMMANDED (GRILL_A_CMD) PID (Parameter Identification)
1. Start the engine and allow it to idle for at least 30 seconds to allow for the grille shutter calibration to complete.
2. Using a scan tool, view PCM (Powertrain Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).
3. Using a scan tool, select the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) PID (Parameter Identification) GRILL_A_CMD and active command the grille shutter from 100% (open) to 0% (closed) while observing the grille shutter operation from the front of the vehicle.
Does the grill shutter fully open and close when commanded by the scan tool?
6. CHECK THE GRILLE SHUTTER FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AND/OR MECHANICAL BINDING CONCERNS
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Remove the grille shutter actuator.
3. Manually open and close the grille shutter, removing any obstructions which can prohibit operation of the grille shutter or linkage. The grille shutter should open and close easily with no binding.
Does the grille shutter operate freely with no binding or obstruction?
7. CHECK FOR CORRECT GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect and inspect the grille shutter actuator electrical connector and jumper harness.
3. Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
4. Reconnect the grille shutter actuator connector, jumper harness and all previously disconnected system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
