Pinpoint Test L: DTC B10D7:31

Anti-Theft - Intelligent Access (IA)

Pinpoint Tests

Pinpoint Test L: DTC B10D7:31

Normal Operation
- DTC B10D7:31 (PATS Key: No Signal) - an on-demand DTC that sets when there is an unprogrammed or damaged
Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Intelligent Access (IA) key. There may not be a concern with the IA key itself, but the key must be programmed into the PATS memory (unless the maximum number of keys are already programmed). The DTC B10D7:31 may also set whenever a self-test is run and only one IA key is present in the vehicle. The
Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module searches for 2 IA keys during an on-demand self-test, and if it only sees one IA key during the self-test, it sets DTC B10D7:31. Place 2 IA keys inside the vehicle. Clear the DTCs.
Repeat the self-test. If DTC B10D7:31 is retrieved again, follow this pinpoint test.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- IA key
- RFA module

PINPOINT TEST L: DTC B10D7:31

NOTE: The ignition must be OFF to carry out the RFA module self-test.

NOTE: Some brands/types of mobile phone or laptop computer chargers may cause interference that could lead to a PATS no-start if the IA key is within a few inches of the charger. If a concern is observed, move the IA key away from the charger and attempt to start the vehicle.

NOTE: DTC B10D7:31 can set whenever a self-test is run and only one IA key is present in the vehicle. The RFA module searches the vehicle for 2 IA keys and if it only identifies one IA key during the self-test, it sets DTC B10D7:31. Place 2 IA keys inside the vehicle. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test. If DTC B10D7:31 is retrieved again, follow this pinpoint test.

-------------------------------------------------
L1 CHECK BOTH PATS IA KEYS

NOTE: Check to make sure the new IA keys are approved Ford encoded IA keys. Unapproved IA keys do not always operate correctly over various temperature ranges. (IA keys from Ford, Rotunda, or Huf are approved Ford IA keys.)

- NOTE: If possible, do not cut the mechanical key blade until it is determined the IA key is the source of the concern.
- Obtain both IA keys from the customer and follow the procedure using one IA key, then the other. If the customer only has one IA key, it is necessary to obtain a new IA key.

- If it is necessary to obtain a new IA key, program the IA keys. Refer to Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA).
- Clear the RFA module DTCs.
- Place both IA keys in the vehicle.
- Retrieve the RFA module DTCs.
- Is DTC B10D7:31 present with both keys inside the vehicle?

Yes
If DTC B10D7:31 is present with both keys inside the vehicle, ATTEMPT to start the vehicle with only one key at a time inside of the vehicle. If one key can start the vehicle and one key cannot start the vehicle, DISCARD and REPLACE the damaged key. PROGRAM the new key. REFER to Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

If neither key can start the vehicle, GO to L2.

No
If any other DTCs are retrieved, REFER to Body Control Systems.

If no DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK. The DTC may have been set due to an intermittent concern with an IA key or the RFA module. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
L2 CHECK BOTH PATS IA KEYS

- Move one of the IA keys outside of the vehicle and place it on a nearby bench.
- Attempt to start the vehicle, first with only one IA key inside the vehicle, then reverse the position of the IA keys (moving the key on the bench to the interior and the key in the interior to the bench), and again attempt to start the vehicle.
- Does the vehicle start with only 1 of the 2 keys?

Yes
DISCARD and REPLACE the damaged key. PROGRAM the keys. REFER to Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
If neither key can start the vehicle, GO to L3.

-------------------------------------------------
L3 CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA MODULE OPERATION

- Disconnect all the RFA module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the RFA module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new RFA module. REFER to Body Control Systems. RESET the parameters in both the RFA module and the PCM. REFER to Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Parameter Reset - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). PROGRAM the IA keys into the new RFA module. REFER to Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). TRANSFER the keyless entry keypad code into the new RFA module. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Code Programming in Doors, Hood and Trunk &/or Locks. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test.
