Diagnostic Routine M
Diagnostic Overview
P0706, P0707, P0708, P1702, P1705, P1921
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 30 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TR (Transmission Range) sensor provides a fixed frequency duty cycle to the TCM (Transmission Control Module) for each of the various positions of the manual control lever (PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, DRIVE and LOW). The TCM (Transmission Control Module) uses the TR (Transmission Range) sensor signal for LPC (Line Pressure Control), shift scheduling and TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) operation. Additionally, the TCM (Transmission Control Module) transmits TR (Transmission Range) data on the HS-CAN (High Speed Controller Area Network) to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and BCM (Body Control Module) for engine start and reverse lamp operation, respectively.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
- Inspect selector lever and selector lever cable for damage
- Inspect selector lever and selector lever cable for correct adjustment
- Inspect for damaged wiring harness(es)
- Inspect for loose or damaged connectors
Pinpoint Test
NOTE: If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the TCM (Transmission Control Module), REFER to Diagnostic Routine AB: The Transmission Control Module (TCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool Diagnostic Routine AB.
1. VERIFY DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Select PARK.
3. Start the engine.
4. Carry out the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and TCM (Transmission Control Module) self-test.
NOTE: DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) P0706, P0707 and P0708 cannot be set by an incorrectly adjusted selector lever cable.
Are only TR (Transmission Range) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) present?
2. VERIFY SELECTOR LEVER CABLE/LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
1. Verify that the selector lever cable/linkage is correctly adjusted. REFER to Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6F35 .
Is the selector lever cable/linkage correctly adjusted?
3. INSPECT FOR CORROSION OR TERMINAL DAMAGE
1. Select PARK.
2. Ignition OFF.
3. Disconnect 6F35 Transmission C1520A.
4. Disconnect the TCM (Transmission Control Module).
5. Use a mirror to inspect both ends of each connector for damage or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
Are both connectors free of any damage, corrosion, pushed-out terminals, loose wires, or missing or damaged seals?
4. CHECK THE TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
1. Measure:
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
5. CHECK THE TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
1. Disconnect 6F35 Transmission C1520B.
2. Measure:
Are all resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
6. CHECK THE TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
1. Ignition ON.
2. Measure:
Is any voltage present?
7. CHECK FOR A SHORT BETWEEN TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR CIRCUITS
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Measure:
Are all resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
8. CHECK THE TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR CIRCUITS IN THE SOLENOID BODY LEADFRAME FOR AN OPEN
1. Remove the main control cover. REFER to Main Control Cover .
2. Disconnect the TR (Transmission Range) Sensor.
3. Use a mirror to inspect both ends of the connector for damage or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
4. Measure:
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
9. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AND GROUND AT THE TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR
1. Connect the TCM (Transmission Control Module).
2. Connect 6F35 Transmission C1520A.
3. Connect 6F35 Transmission C1520B.
4. Ignition ON.
5. Measure:
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
10. CHECK THE TCM (Transmission Control Module) FOR CORRECT OPERATION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect TCM (Transmission Control Module).
3. Disconnect 6F35 Transmission C1520A.
4. Disconnect 6F35 Transmission C1520B.
5. Prior to reconnecting any previously disconnected connector:
- inspect connector(s) (including any inline connectors) for pushed-out, loose or spread terminals and loose or frayed wire connections at terminals.
- inspect wire harness for any damaged, pinched, cut or pierced wires.
6. Connect the 6F35 Transmission C1520A.
7. Connect 6F35 Transmission C1520B.
8. Connect the TCM (Transmission Control Module).
9. Ignition ON.
10. Using a scan tool, perform TCM (Transmission Control Module) self-test to retrieve DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
Is the concern still present?
