Diagnostic Overview

The Low Oil Pressure Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never or Always On

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

NOTE: If DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms can be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer, temperature gauge or odometer.

REFER to Low Oil Pressure Message Center Warning Indicator .

If the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) fails to receive the oil pressure warning message from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) for less than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the low oil pressure warning indicator to the last state (on or off), based upon the last known good oil pressure status message.

If the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) fails to receive the oil pressure warning message from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0100:00 in continuous memory and defaults the low oil pressure warning indicator on or active.

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Start the engine and listen for engine noise that indicates a low engine oil pressure concern.
- Inspect the tachometer to ensure that it is functioning correctly.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch for signs of external damage.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch connector for signs of corrosion and inspect the harness for damage indicating a cut, open or circuit shorted to ground.

Pinpoint Test

1. VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE TACHOMETER

1. Ignition ON.

2. With the engine running, verify the tachometer is operating.

Does the tachometer operate?

2. VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR

1. Close the hood, decklid/liftgate and all doors.

2. NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warnings. Allow the message center to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
Open the LH (Left Hand) front door and observe the message center.

Is the door ajar message center warning indicator active?

3. CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: EOP (Engine Oil Pressure) Switch.

3. Start the engine.

4. Observe the low oil pressure warning indicator.

Does the low oil pressure warning indicator illuminate?

4. CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175E (3.5L).

3. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) (2.0L GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection)).

4. For 3.5L, measure:

5. For 2.0L GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection), measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

5. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0100:00 recorded?

6. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

7. CHECK FOR A STUCK OPEN ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: EOP (Engine Oil Pressure) Switch.

3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

4. Start the engine.

5. Observe the low oil pressure warning indicator.

Does the low oil pressure indicator turn off?

8. CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175E (3.5L).

3. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C1381E (2.0L GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection)).

4. For 3.5L, measure:

5. For 2.0L GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection), measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

9. CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE

1. Carry out the engine oil pressure test.

Is the oil pressure within specification (REFER to Engine - 3.5L Ti-VCT )?

10. CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (Powertrain Control Module) OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect all PCM (Powertrain Control Module) connectors.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins- install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins- install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
