Diagnostic Overview

The PRNDL Indicator Is Never On or Never Displays P

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

NOTE: If DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0100:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms can be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer, temperature gauge or odometer.

REFER to PRNDL Indicator .

If the PRNDL information is missing from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) sets DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0100:00.

IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

2. RETRIEVE AND RECORD THE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) self-test.

Are any PCM (Powertrain Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

3. CHECK THE PARK DETECT INPUT TO THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Selector Lever.

3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

4. Ignition ON.

5. Monitor the PRNDL indicator with the jumper wire installed and with the jumper wire removed.

Does the PRNDL display P with the jumper wire connected and blank with the jumper wire removed?

4. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster).

3. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

5. CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

6. CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION

1. Disconnect and inspect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.

2. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

3. Reconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

4. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
