Diagnostic Routine D

Diagnostic Overview

The Steering Wheel Controls Are Inoperative Or Do Not Operate Correctly

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to Steering Wheel Switch Function .

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) Fault Trigger Conditions

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Inspect the RH (Right Hand) steering wheel switches for sticking condition.

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0212:00 recorded?

2. CHECK THE RH (Right Hand) STEERING WHEEL SWITCH PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Using a scan tool, view SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Monitor the steering wheel controls PIDs (Parameter Identifications) while pressing each steering wheel switch.

- OK (R_CURS_OK)
- UP CURSOR (R_CURS_UP)
- DOWN CURSOR (R_CURS_DWN)
- LEFT CURSOR (R_CURS_LFT)
- RIGHT CURSOR (R_CURS_RGT)
- VOL+ (SW_VOLDOWN)
- VOL- (SW_VOLUP)
- SEEK+ (SW_SEEKPLUS)
- SEEK- (SW_SEEKMINUS)
- PHONE (SW_PHONE)
- VOICE (SW_VOICE)

Do the PID (Parameter Identification) values agree with the switch positions?

3. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE RH (Right Hand) STEERING WHEEL SWITCHES

1. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

Ignition OFF and wait one minute.

2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module .

3. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Steering Wheel Switch.

4. Ignition ON.

5. Measure:

Are the voltages approximately 5 volts?

4. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE CLOCKSPRING

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Clockspring C218B.

3. Ignition ON.

4. Measure:

Are the voltages approximately 5 volts?

5. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE SCCM (Steering Column Control Module)

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Remove the clockspring. REFER to Clockspring .

3. Ignition ON.

4. Measure:

Are the voltages approximately 5 volts?

6. CHECK FOR APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

1. Using a scan tool, perform the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) self-test.

Are any APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

7. CHECK FOR CORRECT SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) OPERATION

1. Disconnect and inspect all SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) connectors.

2. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

3. Reconnect the SCCM (Steering Column Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

4. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
