Pinpoint Test AN: The Parking Brake Warning Chime Is Inoperative

Normal Operation

The parking brake warning chime warns that the parking brake is engaged when the vehicle is in motion. The parking brake warning chime sounds if the ignition key is in the RUN position, the parking brake is engaged, and the vehicle speed is greater than 4.8 km/h (3 mph). The Smart Junction Box (SJB) monitors the parking brake status and when the parking brake is applied or released, the SJB sends the Instrument Cluster (IC) the parking brake status over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The IC monitors these messages and operates the chime according to the data.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Brake warning indication
- Vehicle speed input
- IC



PINPOINT TEST AN: THE PARKING BRAKE WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE

AN1 CHECK THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION


- Ignition ON.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Observe the brake warning indicator.
- Does the brake warning indicator turn on with the parking brake applied?

Yes
GO to AN2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test I. Pinpoint Test I: The Brake Warning Indicator Is Never On

AN2 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER FOR CORRECT OPERATION


- Verify the speedometer operates.
- Does the speedometer operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AN3.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test G. Pinpoint Test G: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

AN3 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE WARNING CHIME OPERATION


- Slightly apply the parking brake and drive the vehicle at a speed greater than 4.8 km/h (3 mph). Observe the parking brake warning chime.
- Does the parking brake warning chime operate correctly?

Yes
The system is operating correctly at this time. The vehicle must be moving at a speed greater than 4.8 km/h (3 mph) with the parking brake applied.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
