Instrument Cluster - Description
DESCRIPTION
The instrument cluster (IC) (5) (also known as the Instrument Panel Cluster/IPC) for this vehicle is located directly in front of the driver, above the steering column opening. The mounts and the electrical connections, are concealed within the instrument panel behind various trim panels and the cluster itself. The IC contains various indicators, analog gauges, an electronic display unit and an integrated circuit board. The electronic display unit displays odometer information and several indicators, some of which are model dependant.
The optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) makes use of the IC electronic display unit. The EVIC feature provides display options of the outside ambient temperature, compass headings, average fuel economy, elapsed time, numerous textual warning messages, reminder indicators and certain diagnostic information.
The IC has several serviced components. The gauges, indicators, electronic display unit, electronic circuit board and housing are only serviced as an assembly and cannot be adjusted or repaired. If a gauge, an LED unit, the electronic display unit, the electronic circuit board, the circuit board hardware, the cluster overlay or the cluster housing is damaged or ineffective, the entire IC unit must be replaced. The cluster lens, hood and mask are available for separate service replacement.
ELECTRONIC DISPLAY UNIT
The IC includes an electronic display unit (14). The electronic display unit is soldered to the electronic circuit board, and is visible through a window with a smoked lens between the tachometer on the left and speedometer on the right. The dark lens prevents it from being clearly visible when it is not illuminated.
The odometer information is displayed within the electronic display unit. The odometer information is stored in the IC memory. This information can be increased when the proper inputs are provided, but the information cannot be decreased. The odometer can display values up to 999,999 kilometers (999,999 miles). The odometer latches at these values, and will not roll over to zero.
The odometer display does not show leading zeroes, does not have a decimal point and will not show values less than a full unit (kilometer or mile). The unit of measure (km or miles) for the odometer display is shown in the electronic display in the same color and at the same lighting level as the odometer values. The unit of measure for the odometer can be selected using the customer programmable features function of the Integrated Center Stack (ICS) screen module. The odometer has a RENTAL CAR mode, which will illuminate the odometer information in the display whenever either front door is opened while the ignition switch status is OFF or ACCESSORY.
During daylight hours (exterior lamps are OFF) the electronic display unit is illuminated at full brightness for clear visibility. At night (exterior lamps are ON), the electronic display unit lighting level is adjusted with the other cluster general illumination lamps using the panel lamps dimmer function of the interior lighting dimmer control. However, a PARADE mode position of the dimmer control allows the display to be illuminated at full brightness if the exterior lamps are turned ON during daylight hours.
Dual trip odometer (Trip A and Trip B) capability is standard equipment on this vehicle. Both trip odometers appear within the electronic display unit. The trip odometer information is also stored in the IC memory. Each trip odometer can display values up to 16099.9 kilometers (9999.9 miles). Each trip odometer will roll over to zero independently when it accumulates these values. The trip odometer minimum value is 0.0 (miles or kilometers) and does have a decimal point to show values of tenths of a full unit (miles or kilometers).
The unit of measure (km or miles) for the trip odometer display is shown next to the Trip A or Trip B text in the display in the same color and at the same lighting level as the trip odometer values. The unit of measure for the trip odometer can also be selected using the customer programmable features function of the ICS screen module.
VEHICLE SYSTEMS SUPPORT
AUDIBLE WARNINGS
The IC electronic circuit board is equipped with a piezoelectric speaker and programming that allows it to provide various audible alerts to the vehicle operator. These alerts include single chime tones and continuous slow or fast tones. An IC can also produce audible clicks that are used to emulate the sound of a conventional turn signal or hazard warning flasher.
FUEL LEVEL DATA
The IC receives a message from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the Control Area Network (CAN) data bus. The IC uses this information to calculate the proper fuel gauge needle position and to control low fuel indicator operation.
VEHICLE WARNING MESSAGES
When the appropriate conditions exist, messages such as DOOR (door ajar), LoCOOL (low engine coolant), LoWASH (low washer fluid), ESC OFF (Electronic Stability Control/ESC in partial off mode), NoBUS (data bus communication fault), or CHANGE OIL displays in the electronic display unit.
CHANGE OIL MESSAGE
This vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The CHANGE OIL message flashes in place of the instrument cluster odometer for approximately 12 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval has been attained. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message continues to display each time the ignition switch status transitions to ON. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the trip odometer push button on the instrument cluster. To reset the oil change indicator system, (after performing the scheduled maintenance) perform the following procedure:
1. Set the ignition switch to the ON status. (Do not start the engine).
2. Fully press the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
3. Set the ignition switch to the LOCK status.
NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If necessary, repeat this procedure
ELECTRONIC VEHICLE INFORMATION CENTER DISPLAY
The optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) system conveniently allows the driver to select a variety of useful information by pressing the EVIC push button controls, which are located within the EVIC switch pod located on the front of the left horizontal steering wheel spoke. The EVIC display menu options include:
- Compass display
- Outside temperature display
- System status display
- Trip computer functions
- Vehicle information warning message displays
- Economy mode (ECO) display
