Steering Gear - Removal







REMOVAL





1. Place front wheels of vehicle in STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
2. Install steering wheel holder locking steering wheel in STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
3. Remove negative (-) battery cable from battery and isolate cable.
4. Remove cap from power steering fluid reservoir.
5. Using a siphon pump, remove as much power steering fluid as possible from power steering fluid reservoir.
6. Raise and support vehicle. Maintenance




7. On each side of vehicle, remove wheel mounting nuts (3), then tire and wheel assembly (1).




8. If outer tie rods (4) need to be transferred to new gear, loosen tie rod jam nuts (2) on both sides of vehicle.
9. On both sides of vehicle, remove nut (5) attaching outer tie rod (4) to steering knuckle (1) by holding rod end stud stationary while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.




10. Remove each outer tie rod end (2) from steering knuckle (3) using Remover (1), Special Tool C-3894-A.




11. Remove roll pin fastening intermediate shaft extension (4) to power steering gear shaft (3) as follows:
a. Insert Remover (1), Special Tool 6831A, through roll pin fastening intermediate shaft extension to power steering gear.
b. Thread knurled nut (2) all way onto end of Remover.
c. While holding Remove head stationary, turn hex nut pulling roll pin from shafts.
d. Remove roll pin from tool.
12. Slide intermediate shaft extension (4) off steering gear shaft (3).




13. Remove tube nut (4) fastening return hose (2) to power steering gear (1). Remove return hose from gear port.
14. Remove tube nut (4) fastening pressure hose (3) to power steering gear (1). Remove pressure hose from gear port.
15. Manually shift steering gear tie rods to the left side of the vehicle until the stop inside the gear is felt.




16. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, remove mounting screws (2) securing heat shield (1) in front of steering gear.




17. On vehicles equipped with 4.0L engine, remove right stabilizer bar cushion retainer (1) mounting bolts (2). Remove right stabilizer bar cushion retainer (With heat shield).
18. Remove two power steering gear mounting bolts.




19. Carefully remove power steering gear. Tip gear forward at top, then slide gear out left wheel opening. Use care not to cut tie rod boots on shields as gear is removed.
20. If necessary, remove outer tie rods from inner tie rod threads. Count how many rotations it takes to remove each outer tie rod for installation reference.
