Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The BCM provides a 12 V signal to the key cylinder lock and key cylinder unlock circuits, when a key is inserted into the driver or passenger door key cylinder and turned to the left or right, a switch internal to the door latch closes providing a ground for the signal circuit. The voltage within the signal circuit drops to 0 V, the BCM will detect the voltage drop and will commanded the doors to lock or unlock.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Insert the key into the driver door lock cylinder and turn the key to the LOCK position and turn the key to the UNLOCK position while observing the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter. The value should be Idle and change to Lock and Unlock while turning the key.

If the value is always Idle, refer to Driver Key Cylinder Switch Inoperative.

If the value is always Lock or Unlock or Invalid, refer to Key Cylinder Signal Circuit Test.

2. Insert the key into the passenger door lock cylinder and turn the key to the LOCK position and turn the key to the UNLOCK position while observing the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter. The value should be Idle and change to Lock and Unlock while turning the key.

If the value is always Idle, refer to Passenger Key Cylinder Switch Inoperative.

If the value is always Lock, or Unlock or Invalid, refer to Key Cylinder Signal Circuit Test.

Circuit/System Testing

Driver Key Cylinder Switch Inoperative

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

2. Test for less than 1 ohms between the ground circuit terminal listed below and ground.

* Terminal 3 (right hand drive)

* Terminal 8 (left hand drive)

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Test for greater than 9 V between the signal circuit terminals listed below and ground:

* Terminal 9

* Terminal 4

If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. If all circuits tests normal, test or replace the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

Passenger Key Cylinder Switch Inoperative

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

2. Test for less than 1 ohms between the ground circuit terminal listed below and ground.

* Terminal 8 (right hand drive)

* Terminal 3 (left hand drive)

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Test for greater than 9 V between the signal circuit terminals listed below and ground:

* Terminal 9

* Terminal 4

If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. If all circuits tests normal, test or replace the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

Key Cylinder Signal Circuit Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

2. Disconnect the harness connector at the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter is Idle.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminals listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

* Terminal 4

* Terminal 9

4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal listed below and ground. Verify the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter is Unlock.

* Terminal 4 (A23D door latch assembly-driver right hand drive)

* Terminal 9 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger left hand drive)

* Terminal 9 (A23D door latch assembly-driver left hand drive)

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

5. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal listed below and ground. Verify the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter is Lock.

* Terminal 9 (A23D door latch assembly-driver right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger right hand drive)

* Terminal 9 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger left hand drive)

* Terminal 4 (A23D door latch assembly-driver left hand drive)

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

6. Connect the harness connector at the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

7. Insert the key into the passenger door lock cylinder and turn the key to the LOCK position and turn the key to the UNLOCK position while observing the scan tool Key Cylinder Lock/Unlock Switch parameter. The value should be Idle and change to Lock and Unlock while turning the key.

If the value is always Idle, Lock, Unlock or Invalid, test or replace the A23P door latch assembly-passenger

8. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

Component Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate A23 door latch assembly.

2. Test for infinite resistance between the terminals listed below with the switch in the open position.

* Terminal 9 and terminal 3 (A23D door latch assembly-driver right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 and terminal 3 (A23D door latch assembly-driver right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 and terminal 8 (A23D door latch assembly-driver left hand drive)

* Terminal 9 and terminal 8 (A23D door latch assembly-driver left hand drive)

* Terminal 9 and terminal 8 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 and terminal 8 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger right hand drive)

* Terminal 4 and terminal 3 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger left hand drive)

* Terminal 9 and terminal 3 (A23P door latch assembly-passenger left hand drive)
