Transmission Replacement




Transmission Replacement

Tools Required
* J 28467-B (DW117) Universal Engine Support Fixture
* DW 260-010 Auto Transaxle Support Fixture or equivalent

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution Battery Disconnect Caution.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Move the gear select lever to the Park position.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Install J 28467-B (1).




5. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the transaxle.
6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.




7. Remove the clips from the shift control cable and disconnect the cable from the transaxle.




8. Remove the bolts that secure the upper transaxle to the engine.




9. Remove the left transaxle mounting bracket. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement.




10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking Notice Vehicle Damage Warnings.
11. Drain the transaxle fluid.
12. Remove the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement ZF 4HP 16 - Automatic Transmission.




13. Remove the drive axle. Refer to Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Automatic) Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Automatic)Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Manual) Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Manual).
14. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (1.4L/1.6L) Starter Motor Replacement (1.4L/1.6L)Starter Motor Replacement (1.8L/2.0L) Starter Motor Replacement (1.8L/2.0L).
15. Remove the rubber access cover from the transaxle, then remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.




16. Support the transaxle.
17. Remove the bolts from the rear transaxle mounting bracket.
18. Remove the bolt and nut from the damping block connection.




19. Use DW 260-010 (1) to support the transaxle assembly.




20. Remove the bolts that retain the lower engine to the transaxle.




21. Using the DW 260-010 (1), remove the transaxle assembly.

Installation Procedure

Important: After installing the transmission assembly, the shift adapts must be reset. Reset the shift adapts using the scan tool. Go to "Trans Adaptives Reset" under "Special Functions" on the scan tool.





1. Install the transaxle assembly into the vehicle.
2. Use the DW 260-010 (1) to support the transaxle assembly.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice Fastener Notice.

3. Install the bolts (1, 2, 3) that retain the lower engine to the transaxle.

* Tighten bolt (1) to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
* Tighten bolt (2) to 21 Nm (15 lb ft).
* Tighten bolt (3) to 31 Nm (23 lb ft).




4. Install the bolts to the rear transaxle mounting bracket.

Tighten bolt to 62 Nm (45 lb ft).

5. Install the bolt and nut to the damping block connection.

Tighten bolt to 68 Nm (50 lb ft).

6. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.

Tighten the converter to flywheel bolts to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

7. Install the rubber access cover on the transaxle assembly.
8. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (1.4L/1.6L) Starter Motor Replacement (1.4L/1.6L)Starter Motor Replacement (1.8L/2.0L) Starter Motor Replacement (1.8L/2.0L).
9. Install the drive axle. Refer to Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Automatic) Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Automatic)Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Manual) Inner Axle Shaft Replacement - Front Drive Axle (Manual).




10. Install the oil cooler pipes to the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement ZF 4HP 16 - Automatic Transmission.
11. Lower the vehicle.




12. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement.




13. Install the bolts that secure the upper transaxle to the engine.

Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).




14. Install the clips to the shift control cable. Connect the cable.




15. Install the PNP switch electrical connector.
16. Connect the transaxle wiring harness to the transaxle.




17. Remove J 28467-B (1).
18. Install the battery.
19. Add transaxle fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Level Inspection Transmission Fluid Level Inspection.
20. Connect the negative battery cable.
