Camshaft Gear Replacement
Tools Required
* J 45059 Angle Meter
* KM-470-B Angular Torque Gage
Removal Procedure
1.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution Battery Disconnect Caution.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Remove the spark plug cover bolts.
4. Remove the spark plug cover.
5. Disconnect the ignition wires from the spark plugs.
6. Disconnect the crankcase breather tubes from the valve cover.
7. Remove the valve cover bolts.
8. Remove the valve cover washers.
9. Remove the valve cover and the valve cover gasket.
Notice: Use extreme care when installing the camshaft not to nick, scratch, or damage the camshaft lobes or bearing surfaces.
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution Safety Glasses Caution.
10. While holding the intake camshaft firmly in place, remove the intake camshaft gear bolt.
11. Remove the intake camshaft gear.
12. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement Service and Repair.
13. Remove the coolant pump. Refer to Coolant Pump Replacement Removal and Replacement.
14. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly in place, remove the exhaust camshaft gear bolt.
15. Remove the exhaust camshaft gear.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use extreme care when installing the camshaft not to nick, scratch, or damage the camshaft lobes or bearing surfaces.
1. Install the intake camshaft gear.
Notice: Refer to Camshaft Journal Diameter Notice Camshaft Journal Diameter Notice.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice Fastener Notice.
2. While holding the intake camshaft firmly in place, install the intake camshaft gear bolt.
Tighten the intake camshaft gear bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft). Turn another 60 degrees plus 15 degrees using the J 45059 or the KM-470-B .
3. Install the coolant pump. Refer to Coolant Pump Replacement Removal and Replacement.
4. Install the CMP sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement Service and Repair.
5. Install the exhaust camshaft gear.
6. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly in place, install the exhaust camshaft gear bolt.
Tighten the exhaust camshaft gear bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft). Turn another 60 degrees plus 15 degrees using the J 45059 or the KM-470-B .
7. Apply a small amount of gasket sealant to the corners of the front camshaft caps and to the top of the rear valve cover-to-cylinder head seal.
8. Install the valve cover and the valve cover gasket.
9. Install the valve cover washers.
10. Install the valve cover bolts.
Tighten the valve cover bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb in).
11. Connect the crankcase breather tubes to the valve cover.
12. Connect the ignition wires to the spark plugs.
13. Install the spark plug cover.
14. Install the spark plug cover bolts.
Tighten the spark plug cover bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb in).
15. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
16. Connect the negative battery cable.
