Traction Control/Stability Control Indicator Malfunction
Traction Control/Stability Control Indicator Malfunction
Diagnostic Instructions
* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions)provides an overview of each diagnostic category.
Circuit/System Description
The traction control indicator is controlled by the instrument panel cluster (IPC) via serial data messages from the instrument panel module (IPM) or electronic brake control module (EBCM). The traction control indicator will be illuminated when the traction control switch is applied and the traction control system (TCS) will be disabled for the remainder of the ignition cycle or until the system is enabled by the switch.
The EBCM sends a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster to illuminate the traction control indicator when the EBCM has disabled the traction control system due to a DTC. The traction control indicator will also turn ON during the instrument cluster bulb check for 3 seconds and then turn OFF.

Circuit/System Verification
1. Ignition ON, with a scan tool command the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Display Test ON and OFF. The Traction indicator should turn ON and OFF.
• If the indicator does not turn ON and OFF, replace the instrument panel cluster (IPC).
2. Observe the scan tool Instrument Panel Module, Data Display, Inputs for the Traction Control Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the traction control switch. The reading should change between Active and Inactive.
• If the reading does not change between Active and Inactive, refer to Circuit/System Testing.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the traction control switch.
2. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 10 ohm between the ground circuit terminal D and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Traction Control Switch parameter is Inactive.
• If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal C for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the instrument panel module (IPM).
4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal C and the ground circuit terminal D. Verify the scan tool Traction Control Switch parameter is Active.
• If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the instrument panel module (IPM).
5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the traction control switch.
Component Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the traction control switch.
2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal C and the ground terminal D with the switch in the open position.
• If not the specified value, replace the traction control switch.
3. Test for less than 3 ohm between the signal terminal C and the ground terminal D with the switch in the closed position.
• If greater than the specified range, replace the traction control switch.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
