Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

Draining Procedure

Warning

When the transmission is at operating temperatures, take necessary precautions when removing the check/fill plug, to avoid being burned by draining fluid.

Warning

The transmission fluid is hot. Caution must be taken to prevent personal injury when the transmission fluid drains from the transmission.

Note: Previous to the removing of any plug, clean the surrounding area of this plug.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. If equipped, remove the engine shield.

3. If equipped, remove the front compartment insulator.

4. Remove the fluid drain plug (2) and DISCARD the seal ring (1).

5. Drain the transmission fluid into a suitable container.

6. Let the transmission fluid run out for 10 minutes and check the transmission fluid amount. If necessary, fill up the drained amount to the proper level with the correct fluid. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers Fluid - A/T and Transmission General Specifications Transmission General Specifications.

7. Check the collected transmission oil for burnt oil exhalation, metal chips and other foreign bodies. If this the fact, search for the reason caused by the transmission.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

8. Install the fluid drain plug (1) and tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb in).

Filling Procedure

1. Lower the vehicle.

2. Without disconnecting the electrical connector, remove the engine control module and hang aside.

3. Remove the fluid fill plug (1).

4. Fill the transmission with the proper level of the correct fluid. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers Fluid - A/T and Transmission General Specifications Transmission General Specifications.

5. Install the fluid fill plug (1).

Fluid Level Check

Note: The fluid level must only be checked along with the fluid temperature, see scan tool, after performing work or after a loss of fluid and must be corrected, if necessary. Ensure that only the correct transmission fluid for AF40 is used for topping up.

1. Test conditions:

1. Vehicle must be on a flat surface.

2. Selector lever in position P.

3. Engine OFF.

4. Connect scan tool.

5. Delete DTCs.

2. Remove the transmission oil filler plug (1).

3. Start the engine and allow to run until the end of the test.

4. Move through the selector lever positions with the foot brake depressed. Switch the selector lever from position P to D and back to P. Hold each position for at least 2 seconds.
Repeat this process twice.

Warning

The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Transmission fluid may be hot. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. Do not turn the engine off with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening.

5. Check the transmission fluid temperature with the diagnostic tool.

1. If the transmission fluid temperature has reached about 70 to 80 °C, raise the vehicle.

2. Remove the fluid check bolt (5). Remove and DISCARD the O-ring (4).

3. If transmission fluid drips out of the transmission fluid filler overflow tube (3), drain until it stops dripping. If not, add transmission fluid until it drips out of the transmission fluid filler overflow tube (3).

4. If the transmission fluid stops dripping out of the transmission fluid filler overflow tube (3), install the fluid check bolt (5) with a NEW O-ring (4) and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb in).

6. If equipped, install the engine shield.

7. If equipped, install the front compartment insulator.

8. Lower the vehicle.

9. Switch off the engine.

10. Top up 0.4 liters of transmission fluid.

11. Install the transmission oil filler plug with a NEW seal ring and tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb ft).

12. Install the engine control module.
