24 00 023 Removing and installing automatic transmission (6HP26Z)





Special tools required:
^ 00 2 030
^ 11 6 480
^ 16 1 130
^ 23 4 050
^ 24 1 110
^ 24 2 390
^ 24 4 160
^ 24 4 165





Important!
After completion of work, check transmission oil level.
Use only the approved transmission fluid.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!

Warning!
Scalding hazard!
Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.








Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Disconnect battery negative lead
^ Remove front underbody protection
^ Remove rear underbody protection
^ Remove bracket for underbody protection
^ Remove complete exhaust system
^ Support engine with lifter when removing transmission

Remove heat shields (1) and (2).

Important!
Ensure adequate ventilation in the place of work!
Avoid skin contact (wear gloves)!
Avoid eye contact (protective goggles)!
Urea/water mixture can escape when parts carrying urea/water mixture are released. Have a collecting container ready.
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

US vehicles with SCR.

Important!
Maintain conditions of absolute cleanliness.
Connections and covers of urea/water-mixture- carrying lines must be cleaned thoroughly with water after each removal or before each installation!
Thoroughly clean the work area with water after repair work.





Use fluff-free cloths for cleaning (see ETK Electronic Parts Catalogue WAYPALL L20 cleaning cloths).
Seal off connections and lines with special tool 16 1 130!
Thoroughly clean special tool with water after each use.





Release screw.

Tightening torque 18 32 1AZ.

Remove V-clamp (1).

Installation:

V-clamp must be replaced each time it is opened.

Replace seal.





US vehicles with SCR.

Release clamp (4).

Pull metering module (3) out of diesel particulate filter, do not remove.

Release bolts (1) of the suspension diesel particle filter.





Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ.

Release screws (2) from holder and remove.

Tightening torque, 18 20 3AZ.

Lay diesel particle filter to one side.

If necessary remove cable for oxygen sensor and exhaust-gas temperature sensor from holder.





US vehicles with SCR.

Release screws (1).

Remove exhaust system bracket (2).





Release screw (1).

Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ.

Remove holder (2).

Picture shows: diesel particulate filter installed.

Release screws (1).





Remove holder (2).

Release screws (3).

Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ.





Remove propeller shaft.





Version 1:

Move selector lever to parking position "P".

Release shift cable head (1) using a screwdriver from ball head of shift cable.

Detach retainer (2) downwards using a screwdriver.

Slide cable (3) towards rear and disengaged in downward direction.

Installation:

Adjust selector lever.





Type 2:

Grip clamping sleeve (1) and slacken nut (2).

Detach retainer (3) downwards using a screwdriver.

Pull cable (4) out of holder.

Installation:

Adjust selector lever.





Release screws (1) on transmission oil lines from left engine support arm.

Note:

Release screw (1).

Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.

Installation:

Replace sealing rings.

Supporting transmission:





Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050,00 2 030.

Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).

Tasks are described in Transmission bracket.

After completion of work, check transmission oil level.





Remove transmission cross-member.





^ Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
^ Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing sleeve (do not touch pins)
^ Release cable from retainers

Important!
Read and comply with important note.

Release screw (1).





Remove panel (2).

Note:

Crank engine at vibration damper with special tool 11 6 480 in direction of arrow until bolt (1) is visible in opening.

Release all bolts of torque converter with special tool 24 1 110.

Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ.





Prepare special tool (1) 24 4 160 with shaped element (2) 24 4 165 side (A) to (A).

Insert special tool 24 4 160 into opening of transmission housing and tensions slightly with screw (1).





Raise by turning screw (2) and clamp down.





Important!
Risk of damage:
Before the transmission is unflanged, the engine must be supported with a second lifter! Otherwise the engine will tilt.

Release screws.

Tightening torque 24 00 1AZ.

Unflange transmission.





Installation:

Bore (1) in driving disc must be accessible from opening.

Check that fitting sleeves are correctly seated.

Replace damaged fitting sleeves.

Installation:

Rotate torque converter until bore in torque converter is flush with bore in driving disc.

Flange automatic transmission to engine.

After completing work:

Carry out SCR adjustment using BMW

Diagnosis and Information System.
