31 60 000 Removing and installing left or right output shaft

Special tools required:
- 31 1 170
- 31 5 130
- 31 1 170
- 31 5 130

Important! Risk of damage!
Do not drive output shaft out of drive flange with an impact tool.

Remove front wheel.
Release collar nut; to do so, press brake pedal to floor.





Installation:
Replace collar nut, apply a light coating of oil to contact surface and tighten down.
Tightening torque 31 21 2AZ.
Secure collar nut by peening on flat areas of output shaft.

Remove engine underguard at front, middle and rear.
Remove right heat shield from front axle support.
Remove ABS pulse generator. Replacing Front ABS Pulse Generator
Remove jointed rod for ride-height sensor from control arm.
Remove brake hose from bracket.
Remove brake caliper housing with linings and tie back. 34 11 519 Removing and Installing/Replacing Left or Right Front Brake Caliper
Remove stabilizer link from stabilizer. Service and Repair
Press output shaft out of drive flange. 31 60 ... Pressing Output Shaft Out of Drive Flange (Wheel Hub) and Drawing In
Remove control arm at front and rear from front axle carrier. 31 12 000 Removing and Installing Left or Right Control Arm (4WD)
Tilt swivel bearing to one side.

Important!
Check sensor head and line from pulse generator prior to installation for external damage, replacing if necessary.





Press output shaft with special tool 31 1 170 out of front axle differential and remove.

Installation:
Push output shaft over resistance of snap ring.
Output shaft coupling must snap audibly into place.





Note: Replace snap ring on output shaft.

Important!
Replace radial seal on output shaft.





Lever radial seal (1) with a screwdriver (2) out of front axle differential housing (3) or bearing pedestal.





Remove protective sleeve (2) from radial seal (1).

Note:
New radial seal (1) is equipped with a protective sleeve (2).
The protective sleeve prevents the sealing lip from being damaged when the output shaft is inserted into the front axle differential.





Drive radial seal firmly home with special tool 31 5 130. Coat sealing lips of new radial seal with transmission fluid.
Carefully insert protective sleeve into radial seal.





Note:
Withdraw protective sleeve (1) from radial seal before inserting output shaft as far as it will go.
Cut open protective sleeve and remove.

After installation:
Check front differential oil level, correct if necessary
