Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair
Replacing complete steering lock
Caution: After installation, carry out mechanical test (lock cylinder) and electric operational check (e.g. ignition, radio, etc.).
Disconnect ground lead from battery.
Remove steering wheel, refer to Steering Wheel.
Removing lower trim section from instrument panel.
Take off collar (1).
Installation:
Check position of collar (1) relative to snap ring (2).
Recess in collar locks snap ring.
Procedures are shown on a removed steering column for better demonstration.
Remove screws and pull off clip.
Pull lower section of steering-column casing off upper section.

To remove upper trim section on steering column, also loosen both shear-off screws on steering column mount, refer to Removing and Installing Complete Steering Column.
Installation:
Check for correct position of lock.

Use new shear-off screws.
Installation:
Guide both holders into bores.
Insert ignition-lock ring.
Remove screw and pull off clip.
Press retaining hook and pull off switch.
Unscrew earthing cable.
Remove both headless screws and take off starter switch.
Installation:
Lock headless screws with varnish.
If necessary, unscrew interlock cable (1).
Lift out snap ring (1) and take off with sleeve (2).
Installation:
Fit bush (2).
Fit snap ring (1) with special tool 32 1 090 and steering wheel retaining screw until it engages in groove of steering spindle.
Snap ring (1) can also be mounted using special tool 32 3 070.
Lift out and remove steering-spindle bearing.
Remove shear-off screws.
Installation:
Tighten Torx screws until they shear off.
Turn steering lock to position "R".
Press down on steering spindle and take off steering lock.
Installation:
Dowel pin must fit in bore.
