Camshaft: Adjustments
Adjusting Camshaft Timing:
Hold crankshaft in TDC position with Special Tool 11 2 300.
CAUTION! Remove special tool prior to operating engine.
CAUTION! If camshaft position has to be corrected enough for there to be valve movement in cylinders No.1 and 6,, first rotate crankshaft enginewise approx. 30° from TDC position, and do not turn back until camshaft start to rotate.
This prevents contact between valves and pistons.
Turn camshaft until peaks of intake and exhaust cams in cylinder No.1 point to each other.
Unscrew and remove the three rear screws for the timing cover screw connection.
Align camshafts by turning on the hexagon.
CAUTION! Do not damage the cylinder head.
If necessary, machine open-end wrench accordingly.
Fit special tool 11 3 240 to camshaft on cylinder 6.
Install primary timing chain on the sprocket and centre with the exhaust camshaft.
Arrow on sprocket faces up.
Mount sprocket to have the tapped bores on the left-hand side of the slots so that the sprocket will be turned counterclockwise while installing the chain tensioner.
Install special tool 11 3 390 in chain tensioning sleeve (1)
Screw in adjusting screw on tensioning rail as far as stop, but do not tighten.
NOTE: Sprocket slots are now centered.
Install chain guide.
Install secondary tensioner.
Mount sensor gear on the intake camshaft.
CAUTION! Danger of mixing up
1. Stud for cylinder head cover installation
2. Stud for thrust washer and sprocket installation
Mount thrust washer and secure with studs.
CAUTION! Mount the intake camshaft sprocket correctly
Flat side faces VANOS control unit.
Collar faces camshaft.
Mount both sprockets together with chain.
Arrow on exhaust camshaft sprocket points up.
Slots centered.
Mount thrust washer on intake camshaft and secure with nuts.
Mount thrust washer on exhaust camshaft using bolts. Install bolts to be turnable without play, but do not tighten at this stage.
Installation:
Check for dowel sleeves (1).
Apply 3 Bond 1209 (refer to BMW Parts Service) liquid sealing compound on corners of joint between cylinder head and VANOS control unit.
Replace seal.
CAUTION! Before installing the VANOS control unit, turn the sprockets together with secondary chain as far as right-hand stop until slots are aligned with the studs.
CAUTION! Before mounting the VANOS control unit, push back splined shaft together with hydraulic plunger (1) in direction of housing (2) as far as stop.
Installation:
Apply the VANOS control unit.
Turn splined shaft (1) until splines mesh.
Turn the sprockets with mounted chain counterclockwise far enough that the splined shaft meshes in the splines of sprocket (2).
CAUTION! It is absolutely essential to ensure that the "FIRST" suitable tooth meshes.
Move VANOS control unit in direction of the cylinder head.
Guiding the bevel splined shaft into the bevel splined sprocket causes the chain together with sprockets to be turned counterclockwise.
Guide chain together with sprockets counterclockwise by hand.
Tighten VANOS control unit.
Unlock secondary tensioner.
NOTE: It is absolutely necessary to pull the chain into the root of teeth on the sprockets for timing diagram adjustments since introduction of rubber-lined sprockets.
Preload clamping rail with special tool 11 3 390 by rotating the adjusting screw with special tool 00 2 050 or standard torque wrench to torque of 1.3 Nm.
Tighten bolts of exhaust camshaft sprocket in two step as specified.
Tightening torque:
M7 Screw
Application torque = 5 Nm
Jointing torque = 22 Nm
Remove plug mandrel, special tool 11 2 300 and special tool 11 3 240.
Crank engine twice in its direction of rotation.
Hold crankshaft in TDC position with Special Tool 11 2 300.
CAUTION! Do not turn the engine back.
Remove special tool prior to operating engine.
Check adjustment of camshafts.
Fit special tool 11 3 240 to camshaft on cylinder 6.
NOTE: special tool 11 3 240 must abut flush with cylinder head
CAUTION! During camshaft adjustment, always ensure that the timing chain is and preload with special tool 11 3 390.
Remove special tool 11 3 240 from cylinder head.
Relieve tension on special tool 11 3 390.
Insert chain tensioner plunger.
Installation:
Insert chain tensioner piston (1) in such a way that the guide tabs engage in the tensioning rail.
Install spring (2) and bolt (3).
Replace sealing ring.
Install plugs.
Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
