Cylinder Head Remove and Install
REMOVING AND INSTALLING CYLINDER HEADCAUTION: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.
NOTE: The cylinder head is removed together with the bolted exhaust manifold.
- Disconnect battery ground lead.
- Remove engine hood.
- Pull off plug (1) and lift out leads.
- Loosen hose clamp (2).
- Unscrew nut (3) and take out air cleaner with air flow sensor.
Removing Cylinder Head Cover
- Unscrew ignition lead tube (1).
- Disconnect hose (2) and pull out spark plug connectors.
- Unscrew cylinder head cover.
Installation Note:
- Check gaskets, replacing if necessary.
6 mm 10 Nm (7 ft lb).
7 mm 15 Nm (11 ft lb).
- Pull off hose.
Installation Note: Replace hose.
- Pull off hoses (4 and 5).
- Disconnect accelerator cable (6).
- Lift out hose (7).
- Unscrew manifold.
Installation Note: Check O-rings, replacing if necessary.
- Unscrew plug and drain coolant.
Installation Note:
- Pour in coolant and bleed system.
- Replace engine oil.
- Torque coolant plug to 50 + 6 Nm (37 + 4 ft lb).
- Remove exhaust assembly.
- Unscrew heat shields (8... 10).
- Unscrew cross member (11) and stabilizer (12) on the engine carrier.
- Disconnect radiator hose (13).
- Pull off plugs (14... 16).
- Pull off lead (4).
- Disconnect wire harness.
- Loosen straps and disconnect plug (17).
- Unscrew fuel pipe (18).
- Disconnect hose (19).
- Pull off plug (20).
- Pull off plug on throttle bypass valve.
- Disconnect hose (21) and unscrew throttle bypass valve (22).
- Disconnect hose (23).
- Unscrew holder.
- Unscrew fuel pipe (1).
- Pull off hose (2).
- Disconnect hose (3).
- Pull off plug (4) and take electric lead plate off of fuel injectors.
- Remove timing case, Remove and Install Timing Case.
- Unscrew bolts.
6 Cyl. S38 Tighten Sequence:
- Unscrew cylinder head bolts in order of 14 through 1 and lift off cylinder head.
INSTALLATION:
- Check O-ring, replacing if necessary.
- Coat pipe with Silastic.
- Clean cavities in crankcase/cylinder head bolts - and lubricate cylinder head bolts with oil.
- Replace cylinder head gasket, Cylinder Head Gasket, Replace.
NOTE: When mounting the cylinder head:
- Pull out the timing chain from above.
- Press in the tensioning rail.
- Place the timing chain on the reversing sprocket.
- Tighten bolts in order of 1 through 14.
Step #1 50 Nm (37 ft lb).
Step #2 80 Nm (59 ft lb), Run engine warm 15 minutes!
Step #3 100 Nm (74 ft lb).
CAUTION: Remove oil and debris from bolt holes. If not, improper values or damage may result.
NOTE: Install new, lightly oiled bolts.
- Reinstall all auxiliary components in reverse order of disassembly, paying close attention to installation notes and torque specs.
- Adjust engine idle speed and check CO level.
