Shift Cable: Service and Repair






Selector Lever Cable

Removing

Proceed as follows:

- Place selector lever in position P.

- Switch ignition off.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 3 - from mass air flow (MAF) sensor (G70).





- Open clips - 1 and 2 - and remove air guide hose from mass air flow (MAF) sensor (G70).

- Remove front air intake nozzle from lock carrier - 4 -.

- Remove engine cover.

- Remove securing plate - C -.





- Press securing plate - A - upward and remove.

- Press selector lever cable off of selector shaft lever - arrow - and remove from bracket - D -.

Selector lever cable must not be bent or kinked.

Ignore items - 1 and B -.

- Remove oxygen sensor (O2S) behind three way catalytic converter (TWC) (G130).

- Remove exhaust system bracket and tunnel brace - arrows -.





- Remove heat shield - arrows -.





Risk of damaging decoupling elements.

Do not bend decoupling elements in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

- Separate exhaust system at clamping sleeve - 1 -.





- Lower front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter and front muffler slightly and remove heat shield toward rear.

- Reconnect exhaust system with clamping sleeve.

- Remove selector mechanism shift unit - arrows -.





- Carefully slide selector mechanism shift unit with boot forward over selector lever cable without damaging boot.

Risk of destroying electronic selector mechanism components with static discharge.

Do not touch circuit board - B - with fingers.

- Remove screws - arrows -.





- Remove locking plate - A - from selector mechanism function unit by unclipping left and right retaining tabs.

- Place selector lever in position S.





- Remove selector lever cable securing plate - 1 - downward.

- Pull plastic securing spring - 2 - forward slightly and press mounting pins - 3 - up only as far as necessary - arrow -.

Ensure mounting pins are not pushed all the way out.

- Remove selector lever cable - 4 - from selector mechanism function unit.

Selector lever cable must not be bent or kinked.

Installing

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Replace selector lever cable securing plate and lock washer.

If boots are damaged, selector lever cable must be replaced.

- Guide selector lever cable into selector mechanism shift unit without damaging boot.

- Snap boot into selector mechanism shift unit.

Ensure boot is seated correctly and is not twisted.

- Insert end of selector lever cable - 4 - into selector lever joint.





- Press mounting pins - 3 - down - arrow -.

The plastic securing spring - 2 - must engage in mounting pins.

- Secure selector cable to selector mechanism function unit with new securing plate - 1 -.

Installation position: Angled end of securing plate faces toward function unit.

Risk of destroying electronic selector mechanism components with static discharge.

Do not touch circuit board - B - with fingers.

- Clip in left and right of locking plate - A -.





- Tighten bolts - arrows -.

- Hand tighten selector mechanism shift unit with bonded seal to selector mechanism function unit - arrows - while noting position of seal.





- Insert selector lever cable boot in selector mechanism shift unit.

- Press selector lever cable opposite direction of - arrow - onto selector shaft lever on transmission.





- Install lock washer - A - and engage downward.

- Install securing plate - C -.

- Shift selector lever from S to P.

Check whether selector lever can be shifted easily.

If selector mechanism is difficult to move, selector lever cable must be replaced or selector mechanism must be serviced.

- Tighten selector mechanism shift unit - arrows -.





- Install heat shield.

- Install exhaust system without tension.

- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Check shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism and Ignition Key Withdrawal Lock, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.
