Flange Shaft Seals, Rear Final Drive Removed

The seals can only be replaced when the final drive is removed.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Slide Hammer - Complete Set (VW 771)

Thrust Piece (T40221)

ATF

Removing

- Follow the general repair instructions. Refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.

- Remove rear final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive ] Rear Final Drive.

- Remove the flange shaft bolt. While doing this, install the two bolts into the flange counter hold the flange shaft using a tire iron.






- Remove the flange shaft.

Use the (VW 771) to remove the flange shaft if it is not possible to remove it manually.

- Remove the flange shaft seal using the (VW 771) and the additional part for the slide hammer (VW 771/37).






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Be sure to note the following:

Install Right Shaft Seal.

- Coat the outer circumference and the sealing lips on the shaft seal with ATF.

- Install the new shaft seal all the way without tilting it.






Install Left Shaft Seal.

- Coat the outer circumference and the sealing lips on the shaft seal with ATF.

- Install the new shaft seal all the way without tilting it.






- Install the flange shaft.

If it is not possible to install the flange shaft all the way on by hand, then use a plastic hammer.

- Tighten the new bolts to the tightening specification - item 1 - => [ (Item 1) Bolt ] Rear Final Drive Overview.

- Install rear final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive ] Rear Final Drive.

- Check the ATF level in the rear final drive. Refer to => [ ATF Level in Rear Final Drive 0BF and 0BE, Checking ] ATF Level In Rear Final Drive 0BF and 0BE, Checking.
