Removing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.

Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.

- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned on.

- Remove the driver side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover with Knee Airbag ] Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover with Knee Airbag.






Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 3 -.

- Pull the locking mechanism - 2 - in the direction of the - arrow - and disconnect the connectors - 1 - and - 3 -.






- Remove the bolts - 1, 4, 5, 8 -.






- Disengage the driver side knee airbag from the hook - 2 - and the tab - 7 - and remove it downward.

- Lay the driver knee airbag so the padding faces up.

Installing

Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.

Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:

Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Make sure the wires do not get caught.

- Replace airbag securing components after a deployment.

- Slide the tab - 7 - into the mount on the knee airbag bracket.






- Make sure the bolting eye comes into contact between the knee airbag bracket and the instrument panel - 6 -.

- Engage the hook - 2 - on the knee airbag bracket.

- Tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 8 -.

The knee airbag upper mounting points are bolted to the driver side instrument panel cover later.

- Press the supports up without play and tighten the bolts - 4 - and - 5 -.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect the battery GND cable with the ignition turned on.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
