Driver Airbag Igniter (N95)/Driver Airbag Igniter 2 (N250)
Removing
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storage, Transporting and Disposal.
- Move the steering wheel as far down as possible.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Disconnect the battery GND cable with the ignition switched on.
- Turn the steering wheel so the cap - 1 - on the rear side of it faces upward. This is approximately the 12:00 position.
- Tape off the upper trim panel for the steering column switch module in the area of the airbag threaded connection to avoid damaging the surface.
- Pry the cap off - arrow -.
- Remove the driver airbag bolt - arrow -.
- Turn the steering wheel 180° and repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
- Bring the steering wheel back into the center (wheels are straight).
Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove the driver airbag from the steering wheel slightly.
- Pull the connector lock - 1 - up to the stop - arrow - to disconnect the connector - 2 -.
- Vehicles with a multifunction and Tiptronic steering wheel: Disconnect the connector - 3 -.
- Remove the airbag - 4 -.
Set the airbag down so the padding faces upward.
Installing
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
• Make sure the wires do not get caught.
- Connect the spiral spring electrical connector with the airbag connector coupling on the coil connector with slip ring.
- Press in the harness connector to secure in the pockets on the steering wheel.
- Position the driver airbag in the steering wheel.
- Install the 2 bolts - arrow - for securing the driver airbag approximately 2 turns.
- Press horn about 3 times to achieve even gap dimension.
- Do not touch the airbag anymore.
- Tighten screws - arrow -.
- Press cover cap into cut-out on steering wheel.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect the battery GND cable with the ignition turned on.
- Check and erase the airbag control module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory (J234) so that faults can be stored when the connectors are disconnected using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
