Camshaft, Measuring Radial Clearance
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Plastigage(R)
Procedure
- Remove the camshafts. Refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
- Mark the assignment of the roller rocker lever for installation later.
- Remove the roller rocker lever and place it on a clean surface.
- Clean the bearing and the bearing journals.
- Place Plastigage(R) over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing.
• Plastigage(R) must rest in center of bearing.
- Install the camshafts, mount the guide frame and tighten the bolts to 8 Nm. Refer to => [ Camshaft Guide Frame Tightening Specifications and Sequence ] Valve Train Overview. When doing this, be careful not to rotate the camshafts.
- Remove the bearing bracket and camshafts.
- Compare width of Plastigage(R) with calibrated scale.
Radial clearance:
• For 24 mm diameter bearings: 0.024 to 0.066 mm
• For 36 mm diameter bearings: 0.032 to 0.078 mm
