Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension
Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1783)
• Wheel Hub Support (T10149)
• Insert Tool (T10212)
Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent.
Before axle components with bonded rubber bushings are tightened, they have to be brought to a position which matches the position when the vehicle is being operated (control position).
Otherwise the rubber mounting will be stressed, resulting in a reduced service life.
This position can be simulated on the lifting platform by raising the wheel bearing housing using (V.A.G 1383 A) and (T10149).
Requirement
• Engine must be installed.
- Place vehicle on hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Perform system venting using vehicle diagnostic tester. Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.
- Clean area around wiring connection.
- Remove connector piece - 1 - at residual pressure retaining valve - 2 - using (T10212). Air escapes then.
- Seal both connections. Make sure that no dust particles enter connections.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.
- Install (T10149) with wheel bolt.
- Insert (T10149) into (V.A.G 1383 A) and press wheel bearing housing far enough upward until control position, dimension - a -, is obtained.
Control Position
• Dimension - a - for vehicles with air suspension 465 mm
• Do not lift or lower vehicle when the (V.A.G 1383 A) stands below the vehicle.
• Do not leave (V.A.G 1383 A) below vehicle any longer than necessary.
Working after Adjusting Control Position
- Tighten respective bolts/nuts.
- Lower wheel bearing housing.
- Remove (V.A.G 1383 A) under the vehicle.
- Remove (T10149).
- Tighten the connecting piece - 1 - at the residual pressure retaining valve - 2 - to 10 Nm using a (T10212).
- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.
- Air suspension system, filling. Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.
