Front Drive Axle

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Thrust Tube (VW 454)

• Thrust Plate (VW 401)

• Punch (VW 408 A)

• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)

• CV Joint Boot Clamp Tool (V.A.G 1682)

• Circlip Pliers (VW 161 A)

• Thrust Disc (VW 412)

Outer Driveshaft Joint, Removing and Installing






Removing

- Remove both clamps from CV boot.

- Remove protective boot from outer joint.

- Drive outer joint off driveshaft by hitting forcefully using a plastic hammer.

Installing






- Before installing CV joint or triple roller star, splines - A - must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.

- Insert the new sealing ring in groove on shaft.

- Slide on CV joint up to sealing ring.






- Align sealing ring at center with opening upward - see arrows -.

- Drive CV joint onto shaft with plastic hammer until circlip engages.

- Large and small clamps, tensioning on inner or outer joint. Refer to => [ Small and Large Clamps, Tightening on Inner or Outer Joint ] Description and Operation.

Inner CV Joint, Removing and Installing






Removing

- Remove both clamps from CV boot.

- Pull off CV boot from inner joint.

- Drive off inner joint cover.

Remove circlip using (VW 161 A).

- Press off inner joint from drive axle, as depicted in illustration. Hold drive axle securely while doing so.






Inner joint cannot be disassembled for checking.

Installing






In order to install inner CV joint, outer CV joint must first be removed.

- Press the inner CV joint onto the drive axle as shown in the illustration.

- Install new circlip on driveshaft using (VW 161 A).

- Place new cover on inner joint.

Large and small clamps, tensioning on inner or outer joint. Refer to => [ Small and Large Clamps, Tightening on Inner or Outer Joint ] Description and Operation.
