Power Steering Gear

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm Dia. (3094)

Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)

Tool Insert, AF 17 (V.A.G 1331/6)

Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Support (T10031)

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 B)

Ball Joint Puller (T10187)

Wood block

Removing

In order to remove steering gear, rear subframe must be unscrewed and supported.

- With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

The (3094) must not be secured on return hose in check valve area. Otherwise, check valve will be damaged.

The check valve is in the return hose between the cambers - A arrows - or between hose clamps - B arrows -.

- Clamp the intake hose and the return line on the reservoir using (3094).






- Remove front noise insulation - 1 and 2 -.






- Remove wheels.

- Rotate steering gear toward left until stop.

- Remove nut and press tie rod off of wheel bearing housing.






- Remove connector - arrow 1 - from servotronic solenoid valve (N119).






- Remove coolant hose bracket - arrow 2 - from return line. Place coolant hoses on front final drive.

- Remove the heat shield - A - from steering gear (2 bolts).






- Remove bolt - B - for universal joint at steering gear and remove universal joint from steering gear.

- Remove bracket for hydraulic lines - 1 -.






- Remove pressure line and return line - 2 - from steering gear.

- Remove the heat shield - 1 -.






- Remove bolts - arrows - from steering gear.






- Insert (T10031) in (V.A.G 1383 A).






- Place wood block - 2 - on (T10031).

- Support rear subframe in lower control arm area - 1 -.

- Only remove rear bolts from subframe.

- Lower the subframe with the (V.A.G 1383 A) just far enough so that the (V.A.G 1383 A) continues to support the subframe. Do not allow subframe to hang freely.

- Remove steering gear from mounts.

- Slide steering gear to right side of vehicle in direction of - arrow 1 -.






- Skirt servotronic solenoid valve - 1 - around coolant hoses - 2 - and rotate steering gear forward.






- Swing left tie rod downward.

- Remove steering gear downward toward left side of vehicle in direction of - arrow 2 -.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Tighten new bolts from subframe. Refer to => [ Subframe, Stabilizer Bar and Coupling Rod Overview ] Front Axle Overview.

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Steering Gear Overview ] Steering Gear Overview

- Bleed steering system. Refer to => [ Steering System, Bleeding after Reinstalling ] Service and Repair.

- Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to => [ Steering System, Checking for Leaks ] Steering System, Checking For Leaks.

- Check hydraulic fluid level and fill, if necessary. Refer to => [ Power Steering, Checking Hydraulic Oil Level ] Power Steering, Checking Hydraulic Oil Level.

- After installation, a vehicle alignment must be performed. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.

- Perform steering angle sensor (G85) basic setting with vehicle diagnostic tester.
