Tie Rod






Tie Rod

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Open-Jaw Torque Wrench Insert (V.A.G 1923)

Ball Joint Puller (T10187)

Locking Pliers (VAS 6199)

Removing

Tie rods at left and right are identical.

They can be removed and installed with the steering gear in the vehicle.

- With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Remove front wheel.

- Clean outside of power steering gear in area of boot.

- Check boot for wear (slits, cracks) and check sealing surfaces of boot for dirt.

- Open clamp and push back boot.

- Check whether a steering arm thrust ring - 1 - is installed.






- Remove tie rod using (V.A.G 1923).






- Remove nut and press tie rod off of wheel bearing housing.






- Remove tie rod using (V.A.G 1923).






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Note location of steering arm boundary => [ Large steering arm boundary contact surface faces toward tie rod. Collar points to steering gear. ] Steering Arm Thrust Ring.

- Tighten the tie rod to 100 Nm using an (V.A.G 1923).






- Install boot and clamp.

Only use original clamps.

- Tighten clamp using (VAS 6199) as far as shown in illustration.






- Tighten the tie rod with a new nut to 90 Nm on the wheel bearing housing.

- After installing a new tie rod, vehicle must be aligned. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.

- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.

- On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
