ABS Control Module

ABS Control Module

It is necessary to remove the ABS hydraulic unit (N55) and the ABS control module (J104). Refer to => [ ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module ] ABS Hydraulic Unit With ABS Control Module.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 505 x)

Torque screwdriver (V.A.G 1624) 1-5 Nm.

External TORX(R) socket for the torque screwdriver (V.A.G 1624)

ESD work surface (VAS 6613)

External TORX(R) socket E6.

Read the general information before removing. Refer to => [ Exchanging Control Modules ] Exchanging Control Modules.

Before removing control module, read out DTC memory and print out fault code if necessary.

The control module and the hydraulic unit can be separated.

The ESP unit must be removed in order to separate the control module and the hydraulic unit.

Only qualified personnel with the necessary training should remove the ESP unit.

Only qualified personnel wilt the necessary training should separate the control module and the hydraulic unit.

Removing

It is necessary to remove the ABS hydraulic unit and the ABS control module.

Separate the ABS control module from the ABS hydraulic unit only when they are removed.

Hydraulic unit, removing and installing, refer to => [ ABS Hydraulic Unit with ABS Control Module ] ABS Hydraulic Unit With ABS Control Module.

The (VAS 6613) has sufficient grounding to protect against an electrostatic discharge.

- Lay the hydraulic unit and the control module on the (VAS 6613).

The control module - 2 - faces up and the hydraulic unit - 4 - with the pump motor and connector - 3 - faces down.

- Remove the bolts - 1 -.

Throw the old bolts away immediately.

Do not use the old bolts again.

- Remove the control module upward holding it vertically.

Be careful not the hook the valve coils when removing them otherwise the valve coils could get stuck on the mount.

Cover the open hydraulic unit. Protect the hydraulic unit, the sealing surfaces, the valve bodies and the pressure sensor from dirt or from getting damaged.

Do not use battery voltage to check the pump motor otherwise contact surfaces could get burned.

Protect the contact surfaces on the pressure sensor against mechanical damage and electrostatic discharge. The (VAS 6613) grounds the technician sufficiently to protect again overcharging components.

Assembling

Use new bolts.

- Clean the sealing surface on the hydraulic unit - 2 - with a plastic scraper - 1 -.

Be careful not to damage or bend the valve body - 3 -.

The sealing surface on the hydraulic unit must have a clean, even surface.

If sealing surface or contact tags are damaged, hydraulic unit must be replaced.

The seal on the control module cannot be replaced.

The seal on the control module must not be pulled out or raised up.

Do not use aggressive cleaning agents (use cleaning agent enclosed).

Check sealing surface for damage (visual check).

Moisture and dirt particles must not enter the inside of the control module.

Do not use compressed air to clean the control module or hydraulic unit.

Excessive shaking (e.g. dropping, impact) may destroy the control module. Control module must then no longer be used.

- Check the valve body inside the hydraulic unit for damage.

The hydraulic unit cannot be used again if the valve body is damaged or bent.

The hydraulic unit - 4 - with the pump motor and the connector - 3 - faces down.

- Mount the control module on the hydraulic unit carefully from the top with the valve coils hanging.

Be careful not to tilt the valve coils.

Use new bolts.

- Install the bolts (do not tighten) until the control module touches the hydraulic unit evenly.

- Tighten the bolts diagonally.

Tightening specification: 4.5 Nm.

After tightening, check;

if all the bolts have made contact.

if the control module and hydraulic unit are touching all the way around.

- Install unit. Refer to => [ Installing ] ABS Hydraulic Unit With ABS Control Module.

- Bleed brake system, refer to => [ Brake System, Bleeding ] Service and Repair.

Start the program in guided functions on the (VAS 505 x) if the control module is replaced.

- Turn off the ignition and connect the (VAS 505 x) to the diagnostic connection.

Switch on ignition

DTC memory interrogated, errors shown corrected and DTC memory erased.

- Start the program in Guided Functions.

After replacing the control module and bleeding the brake system:

All the ESP warning lamps must turn off.

Make sure the brakes are working correctly before driving the vehicle for the first time.
