Glow Plugs
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Socket Insert AF 12 for Glow Plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR (VAS 6454)
• Pliers (3314)
Glow Plug Versions
1 Glow plug with combustion chamber pressure sensors (vehicles with engine code CBEA)
2 Glow plug without combustion chamber pressure sensor
• The combustion chamber pressure sensor in integrated inside each glow plug on vehicles with engine code CBEA.
• Component designation: glow plug 1 (Q10) with cylinder 1 internal pressure sensor (G620)
• Component designation: glow plug 2 (Q11) with cylinder 2 internal pressure sensor (G621)
• Component designation: glow plug 3 (Q12) with cylinder 3 internal pressure sensor (G622)
• Component designation: glow plug 4 (Q13) with cylinder 4 internal pressure sensor (G623)
Removing
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Service and Repair.
Be careful not to damage the wire connection when removing the glow plug connector otherwise the entire wiring harness will have to be replaced.
Do not squeeze the (3314) too hard when removing the glow plug connector otherwise the protective sleeve will get damaged.
- Free up the wiring harness - 2 - and open the clamps.
- Position the (3314) with the groove - arrow A - on the collar of the protective sleeve - arrow B - and pull the glow plug connector off the glow plugs.
- Clean the glow plug duct in the cylinder head. Contaminants must not enter the cylinder.
• Example for cleaning:
• Extract large contaminants with a vacuum cleaner.
• Spray a brake cleaner or a suitable cleaner into the glow plug shaft, let it work and then use compressed air to remove it.
• Then clean the glow plug duct with a cloth dampened with oil.
• Use the (VAS 6454).
Installing
- Use a suitable torque wrench to tighten the glow plugs.
- Tighten the glow plugs to the tightening specification.
• Tightening specification is: 17 Nm
- Attach the glow plug connector to the glow plug.
• Make sure the glow plug connectors are securely fastened.
